Autumn Term Learning Journey – Stand By Me
Find out about our learning this week:
Reception
Children continued to explore the wonderful story ‘Where the Wild Things Are‘ putting many of our Learning Toolkit skills into practice! They used their imagination to create exciting adventures, made links between Max’s story and their own experiences, and showed fantastic collaboration as they worked together as a whole class to bring the story to life. They imagined travelling to the land of the Wild Things in helicopters and submarines, getting up to all sorts of mischief along the way! Through acting out their adventures and taking on different roles, the children demonstrated wonderful creativity, teamwork and storytelling skills.
Year 1
This week, Y1 said goodbye to their friendly alien visitor Beegu as she returned to her home planet. To celebrate her journey, the children created fact files all about Beegu. We were especially impressed by how they used their planning and imagining tools throughout the activity. They used adjectives to describe Beegu’s appearance and wrote about what she enjoys eating. The children also practised joining ideas using the conjunction ‘and’. Well done, Year 1 – fantastic work!
Year 2
Y2 began the week with an assembly on standing up to racism, learning the Cupid Shuffle to show their support for equality and respect. In RE, we explored Christian parables and the messages they teach us, using our making links tool to connect these stories to our PSHE learning about relationships and kindness. The children also used their empathy tool to consider others’ feelings and understand the importance of showing kindness and respect.
Year 3
Y3 have been using their imagining tools this week, creating beautiful poetry filled with vivid imagery about the ‘Tear Thief’. We had to persevere to include similes and even a few metaphors! We enjoyed using our collaboration tools with our parents in the Maths workshop on Tuesday morning, demonstrating some of the wonderful techniques and methods we use in maths every day. It was also fun making our first visits to the new school library and exploring all of the wonderful books available to read.
Year 4
In Y4, we persevered and used our imagining and empathy tools to finish our speeches in role as the campaigner Harvey Milk. In computing, we asked questions like: who owns the internet and what can we trust online?, making links to things we understand in the ‘real’, physical world. Thank you to all the parents who came and supported us in our maths workshop!
Year 5
Y5 have used their planning and perseverance tools this week to write detailed biographies of Nelson Mandela, including a range of time adverbials and relative clauses. They have also used their collaboration tools to test water resistance with different plasticine shapes dropped into tanks of water, timing how long each shape took to reach the bottom
Year 6
Y6 have loved starting their new class text, ‘The Arrival’. We have used our empathy goggles and asking questions tool to try and understand what it must be like for people who have to flee their homes. As it is a picture book, it has really allowed us to imagine exactly how the main character must be feeling. We have also enjoyed researching lots of inspirational Black Britons and can’t wait to share our findings with the rest of the year group!
PE UPDATE:
Dulwich Wood took lots of amazing runners to the Southwark PE School Sports Network cross-country event on Wednesday 14th October, in its new location in Southwark Park. In the girls’ Y3/4 race, Evie emerged victorious and in the girls Y5/6 race, Annabel came out on top, both after last-lap comebacks. In the boys’ events, Enzo finished 4th amongst the Y3/4 boys, whilst George finished 2nd in the Y5/6 race. As ever, all the children were a credit to the school in how they supported each other and in how they responded to any setbacks. We are hoping that our request that races in future years be longer will enable us to further demonstrate our distance running prowess! Thank you to the parents who supported the event.

Parent Workshops – Y1 & Y2 next week!
The sessions are practical and interactive, giving parents and carers the opportunity to work alongside their children and experience the approaches we use in school.
You will leave with practical ideas and strategies that you can use at home to support your child’s learning and confidence.
We appreciate that many parents and carers have work and other commitments. However, we would encourage you to attend where possible, or to arrange for another adult to attend and work alongside your child if you are unable to do so yourself.
Year 5 continues to have the highest workshop attendance so far, with an impressive 92% turnout! Thank you to all the parents, carers and other adults who attended to support their children’s learning!
Next Workshops:
Y2 Maths Workshop – Tue 20th Oct – 09:00
Y1 Phonics Workshop – Thu 22nd Oct – 09:00
Children will only be able to attend the workshop if they have an adult attending to work 1:1 with them.

Cauliflower Cards: children will be bringing their greeting card designs and accompanying order forms home this week.
If you would like to purchase a product featuring your child’s design, please visit cauliflowergroup to register, enter our school code (7375) and your child’s unique code, which can be found in the top left corner of your order form.
