Autumn Term Learning Journey – Stand By Me
Find out about our learning this week:
Reception:
This week, we have been enjoying ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. Through the story, we explored Max’s different emotions and talked about how our feelings can change. We linked this to our Dulwich Wood Learning Toolkit – making links, making connections between Max’s feelings and our own experiences, and thinking about ways we can manage and regulate our emotions when we experience big feelings
Year 1
In Geography the children have been learning about aerial views and non-aerial views. We used our making links tool to discover features on Google Maps of our school and playground. Then, we were using our collaboration, planning and imagining tools to make a ‘messy map’ of our classrooms.
Year 2
Y2 have had a fantastic week, finishing our place value unit in maths through lots of practical work, moving our tens into different parts of a number and consolidating our understanding of flexible partitioning. In literacy, we have begun planning our non-chronological leaflet about how we can keep our planet and our bodies healthy. Science has been particularly interesting, as we have been making links with our prior learning to deepen our understanding of woodland habitats and the animals and plants that live there.
Year 3
Y3 have enjoyed starting our new class text, ‘The Tear Thief’. Using our asking questions tool, we have explored the story in greater depth, and with our imagining tool, we wrote diary entries in role as the Tear Thief. In maths, we have been using our making links and perseverance tools to add and subtract numbers up to 1,000. We have also enjoyed learning about influential Black musicians and their contributions to music and culture throughout history.
Year 4
In Y4 we have used our collaboration, reasoning and planning tools to recreate the human digestive system using household items. We loved turning real food into a nutrient ‘soup’… and leftover waste. We also became big fans of wild hares after seeing Chloe Dalton speak about her book ‘Raising Hare’.
Year 5
In Y5, our literacy learning has focused on using the making links tool and planning tool to organise our knowledge of Nelson Mandela in preparation for writing biographies. In computing we have explored how search engines work and how to make searches more specific and effective. We have also really enjoyed sharing our maths skills, collaborating with our parents to play a times table card game in the workshop on Thursday!
Year 6
Y6 loved hosting our Maths Parent Workshop on Tuesday! It was fantastic to see so many adults getting stuck into times tables bingo, arithmetic and problem-solving alongside their children. We hope everyone had fun and came away with some helpful ideas and takeaways to support maths learning at home!

Library Launch

The new Dulwich Wood Library has been launched! Thank you to everyone involved in creating this exceptional space for the children! A special thank you to Sam, Chris, Leanne and everyone who supported this project. Their hard work and care have helped create a welcoming space for our children to enjoy reading!
Thanks to Digby for taking time out of your busy Y7 schedule to officially open the new library!
Parent Workshops – Reception, Y3 & Y4 next week!
The sessions are practical and interactive, with parents/carers working alongside your child and giving you the opportunity to see and experience the approaches we use in school. You will leave with practical ideas and strategies that you can use at home to support your child’s learning and confidence.
We appreciate that many parents and carers have work and other commitments. However, we would encourage you to attend where possible, or to arrange for another adult to attend and work alongside your child if you are unable to do so yourself. It is really important that every child has an adult with them in the session.
The most well-attended workshop so far – 92% of parents/carers/other adult attended the Y5 session to support their child with their learning! Well done Y5 – let’s see which year group will have the highest attendance rate!
