Autumn Term Learning Journey – Stand By Me

Reception: It has been so lovely to welcome all our children into Reception this week! While some are still taking a little time to settle, they are all beginning to get used to their new routines, enjoying exploring their new environment and starting to make some lovely new friendships. We are so proud of how well they have embraced their first week with us. A big thank you to all our wonderful families for your support in helping the children make such a positive start to their Reception journey!

Year 1 have settled so well in their new classrooms! We are so proud how ready they were to start using their new White Rose workbooks for the first time: sorting objects and counting groups. They have become more familiar with the meaning of each Dulwich Wood Learning Tool and started using them straight away. It is great how focused and engaged they already are during carpet sessions.

Year 2 have settled into their learning beautifully and have approached their lessons with enthusiasm, curiosity and confidence. In Spanish, they have demonstrated wonderful perseverance to learn and recall new words and phrases, even when they found them challenging at first. During literacy they have also used their imagining and empathy tools to ask imaginative questions about what a character’s brain might be thinking.

Year 3 have made a fabulous start to the new year, getting stuck into our first learning journey ‘Stand By Me’. It has been wonderful to see all the children back at school, using their toolkits and demonstrating the 4 Cs. In literacy, we have enjoyed meeting ‘Sparky’ the sloth and writing a character description using adventurous adjectives. In history we discussed what the word influential means and then thought about people who influence us. Beech class made a great start with their swimming lessons and Cedar class showed their amazing perseverance in PE. Well done Year 3!

Year 4 have had an incredible first full week, in particular starting our history and literacy work that all focuses on the Empire Windrush ship and the people who sailed on it to Britain in 1948. We’ve used our empathy tool to start understanding the mindset of the ‘Windrush pioneers’ and what they experienced.

Year 5 have been using their whole toolkit in their first full week back to school. We have begun all of our texts and topics this week, from Black British History and the Atlantic Slave Trade to Forces and Place Value. The children have been super excited to start new topics and be in a new classroom environment, and we are already feeling right at home.

Year 6 have had a fantastic first week back! We all used our imagining tools to write School Council speeches and then delivered them to the rest of the school. We also have used our collaboration tool whilst making bridges out of newspaper and tape. Some bridges were more successful than others, but we all had a great time working with our friends.

Meet our new School Council… well done to all the Y6 children who delivered their speeches to their houses…you were all incredible and should feel very proud of yourselves. We look forward to the new ideas that you bring to Dulwich Wood this year!
