Autumn Term Learning Journey – Stand By Me

Reception:
We could not be more impressed with how beautifully the children are settling in, getting used to all of the new routines and making lovely friendships. This week, we have started our phonics and maths learning, and we have also been enjoying lots of wonderful stories about starting school and celebrating birthdays, especially turning four or five! These stories have sparked some great discussions about the different feelings that come with such an exciting milestone in the children’s lives: starting Reception and becoming part of ‘big school’!
Year 1
On Monday Y1 found a mystery object in the playground!!! The children used the asking questions tool to find out what could have happened and the imagining tool to predict what it could be. After checking the security cameras, we found out that it was a friendly alien who landed here. We are still trying to find out what the alien looks like and where it could be. We might need everybody’s help!
Year 2
We have been practising creating our own expanded noun phrases and exclamatory sentences to create our very own poems which have been inspired by our wonderful book, ‘Here We Are’. Our imagining tool has been particularly useful this week, helping us to develop creative ideas and bring our writing to life. In maths, we have been using our making links tool to help us flexibly partition numbers up to 100.
Year 3
Y3 have enjoyed getting stuck into our reading text ‘Lost Species’ this week and using our imagining tool to picture those amazing creatures that once roamed the earth. We have been using our empathy tool in PSHE to talk about our special people and perseverance tool when practising our times tables in Maths. In science we have been using our research skills to find out about what different carnivores eat.
Year 4
Y4 have had another superb week, using our asking questions and reasoning tools to investigate what are the effects of different liquids on teeth. We’ve also continued using our empathy goggles to understand the Windrush Generation, ahead of our trip to the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton next week.
Year 5
Y5 have used their managing distractions tool brilliantly this week, remaining calm and focused throughout every lesson. They have also used their imagining tool brilliantly in their literacy to write powerful, emotive speeches in role as South African activists demanding freedom and equality in the time of Apartheid. We have also been really excited to start our swimming lessons this week!
Year 6
Y6 have had a fantastic week! They have been making great use of their collaboration and asking questions tools across their learning. In Science, they enjoyed making their own blood, using food-dyed Cheerios to represent red blood cells and learning about the different components. In Literacy, they put their critical hats on to write a review of Leonard’s new house, sharing their opinions and supporting them with evidence.
