World Ocean Day Thu 8th June: thank you to Hector (Y5) for reminding us about World Oceans Day and for sharing his whales! He inspired lots of children to make posters, linking our ‘Mum for Lungs’ clean air focus to the importance of clean oceans too!

Mums for Lungs Clean Air Carnival: the Smog Mobile stopped off at Dulwich Wood on route to the Clean Air Carnival. Children in Year 4 and 5 got to find out all about smog (smoke and fog!) and how pollution levels are measured. They were relieved to hear that pollution around Dulwich Wood School in the middle of the day is not at a dangerous level and to know that our School Street is imminent!

Gardening Club: a huge well done to Bonnie, Venture and the Dulwich Wood Gardeners! This is the best crop of broad beans we have ever had, thank you for sharing them. We are now looking forward to the strawberries!

PE Update: The Dulwich Wood Tennis team were very proud to have represented Southwark at the London Youth Games in West London. They played really well and looked super smart in their special Dulwich Wood sports kit!

This week’s learning snapshot…

Reception

The children have been using their asking questions tool to find out lots of facts about the ‘The Great Fire of Tooley Street’ in 1861 and the River Thames. We are really looking forward to our trip on the Thames!

Year 1

We have been using positional and directional language to give instructions to our partners and program Bee-Bots. We’ve really used our perseverance tool especially remembering left and right!

Year 2

We have started learning about the life cycle of frogs in science; 2B have had tadpoles in their classroom this week and next week they will be visiting 2A! In our learning journey we have been thinking about our environment and particularly how we can protect and conserve water.

Year 3

We have become apprentice tea tasters, using all our senses to accurately identify and describe a range of fruit teas, focusing on flavor and any possible health benefits. We then used our reasoning tool to try to persuade each other which tea was the best!

Year 4

We had a great art/DT day to introduce us to our new history topic; we used our reasoning tools to evaluate some Egyptian artefacts and make links to our new text, The Story of Tutankhamun.

Year 5

We have been using our asking questions tool as we started to explore Relationships and Sex Education focusing on how our bodies change during puberty. We have also been focusing on air pollution, making links to our local study of Kingswood Arts and the local area.

Year 6

We have been using our collaboration tool, working together to create a product that we will eventually be able to sell. In Literacy, we are reading ‘Anne Frank’ and have used our empathy goggles to put ourselves in her shoes, imagining what it could have been like as she was growing up.

Sun Safety

The children spend a lot of time outdoors so we want them to be comfortable when enjoying the sunshine – please make sure that they have a hat, sunscreen and a BIG bottle of water. We have water fountains where children can refill their bottle throughout the day.

Staffing Update

As you know Miss Wells joined the KS1 Team at the beginning of the Summer term and has been enjoying working alongside Miss Castle in 2B as well as leading across Key Stage 1. This half term she will be taking more responsibility for the Year 2B class and Miss Castle will be prioritising her SENDco work alongside Miss McPherson. Miss Castle will be talking to 2B about this and reassuring them she will still be teaching them for some lessons each week.

Car Drivers

Please note: Today there was an accident outside of Dulwich Wood School. A Parent and his two children were hit by a reversing car.

‘Every day we cycle in, and every day there is a worrying amount of irresponsible driving and parking all around the Kingswood, Lyall Ave and Bowen Road area. With cars parked all along one side, there are constant battles for cars to pass one another, which means they are far too distracted by this and frequently oblivious to cyclists and pedestrians crossing. It can be terrifying for me and especially the girls.’

Please leave your cars at the front of the Estate and park before trying to drop off/pick up your children. This includes Parents using before and after school club. Several times this week Parents have mounted the pavement, stopped on the zig zag or yellow lines to let their children out, some even leaving their engines running whilst they bring their children to the gate. This is not only unsafe but it is illegal. We look forward to getting our School Street as soon as possible, once that’s happened driving into the Kingswood Estate will be severely restricted. Work with us to be responsible drivers in order to safeguard everyone in our community.
