A snapshot of our learning this week….

Reception completed their work with the text ‘The Magic Paintbrush’. It was a joy to see all the children using their imagining tool both to create some wonderful dragons, as well as to role play some of the villagers in Shen’s town, which they then used to produce some really lovely thank you letters to Shen.

Year 1 used their whole tool kit during the trip to the Horniman Museum. They asked lots of questions to deepen their knowledge of toys and enjoyed exploring the galleries making links and finding interesting facts about animals and artefacts from the 7 continents of the world.

Year 2 have been focusing on using their empathy tool. Finn from our book is on an exciting journey but he is far away from his Mum. We have spent time putting ourselves in his shoes, thinking about what he would write in a letter to his Mum. We knew he would want to tell her about his adventures but also about how he has been feeling.

Year 3 have been using their asking questions tool to come up with ways we could investigate shadows and how they change during the day. We had great fun, (once the sun came out!) drawing and measuring our shadows, they then used their making links tool and their knowledge of light and shadows to draw conclusions! We linked science to maths and used our reasoning tool to draw line graphs to represent the data we collected.

Year 4 have been using their collaboration tool in science to make light bulbs light up using just tin foil and a battery. We have also been looking at acrostic poems and have learnt a whole poem in groups!

Year 5 used their asking questions tool when learning about forces in science. They moulded plasticine into different shapes to see if it would affect the time it took for it to fall through water. They used the making links tool to build upon what they had already learnt about air resistance.

Year 6 have been exploring percentages and learning more about the resilient suffragettes. In science they have been using the planning and reasoning tools to create complex circuits as well as fixing them.

Young Voices

Dulwich Wood School Choir joined 9000 children at the O2 Arena to perform in a spectacular Young Voices concert. Our 45 strong choir, which is run by Catherine Andrews, Head of Music at DUCKS, performed in the ‘largest choir in the world’ alongside guest artists including the world beatbox champions Beatbox Collective, violinist Anna Phoebe and soul singer Heather Small.

On the day, the children witnessed just how much work goes into putting on a polished performance. They rehearsed for three hours with the conductor, choreographer, and live band to ensure that the evening performance would be perfect. Their hard work paid off: the concert was an exhilarating spectacle of choral singing, dance and beatboxing in a world-class venue. It was an evening that the children felt privileged to be part of and one that they will never forget.

Thank you to all the Parents who came along to the O2, your children are amazing!!

Friends of Dulwich Wood Meeting

Monday 30th January – 2.45pm in the Primary School Staff Room

We would like to invite anyone who is interested in applying or voting for the key roles of Chair/Co-Chair and Treasurer/Co -Treasurer of the Friends along to a voting meeting on 30th Jan at 2.15pm. Thank you in advance to the Friends who have volunteered to take on the roles in the event of no new ‘Friends’ coming forward. As Friends is a charity there has to be a formal vote for the key roles so we would appreciate anyone who can spare half an hour to come along to the voting meeting, teas/coffees (and maybe cake…) will be served!!

*Please note: All Parents/Carers are automatically Friends of Dulwich Wood.

Keeping all children safe at pick -up time: Please do not enter the school by the Reception Classes gates unless you have a child in a Reception Class. Staff are responsible for monitoring who enters the Reception outside space and ensuring that it is only Parents/carers of the children who are taught in that space. Please work with us here, safeguarding the youngest children in our school could not be more important.

Lateness: There are still an increasing number of child arriving late, this is affecting some children’s learning as well as causing problems for the kitchen, lunch orders are submitted before 9am. If your child is late then they miss the register and the Office have to order their lunch, making additional work for everyone. We really do need to do your support, our lates are monitored by the Local Authority, please contact the school if you need support in getting your child to school before 8.50am

Chartwells School Dinners – as I am sure you are aware children have been using biodegradable plates and cutlery this half term. This is a temporary measure as we are waiting for a part to be delivered from Europe to mend the industrial dishwasher. The end of last term saw a decline in the quality of the school meals and we have been working hard with Chartwells to ensure the necessary improvements are made. We now have a new chef, he is trying to build a more efficient kitchen and kitchen staff. He has met with School Council, noted and addressed some of the children’s concerns, please do contact the school directly if you want any more information about the school lunch situation.

Teacher Strike Action: we have received notification from the NEU regarding proposed strike action on Wednesday 1st February. I will be able to give you more information on Monday as to which classes will be affected and therefore closed.
