Learning Journey: Sense of Community

Clubs at Dulwich Wood: all of our Autumn Term Extra-Curricular Clubs launched this week. Before School Running Club was so well attended with more than 35 children. Thank you to Mr Greenwood, Mr Barton and Mr Sean along with some parents for supporting the children. The club is now full, but there will be the opportunity to welcome new runners in January.
Our Learning this week:
Reception: The children are settling in really well in Reception! This week we have started teaching phonics and maths, and we have also been reading stories about birthdays (turning 4 or 5) and starting big school, discussing all the feelings children might be having about this very special time in their lives.
Year 1: This week we have enjoyed delving deeper into our story ‘Flooded’. We have been using our imagining tool to help us think about how the characters were feeling in the story. We decided to create protest signs to help bring about change and find a solution to their problem using contractions such as don’t, can’t and let’s. Great work!
Year 2: This week the children used their empathy goggles to help us understand how the animals feel about the flood. We used contractions to make protest banners and marched around the school to raise awareness!
Year 3: We have been making great use of our empathy and imagining tools this week, writing in the role of the Emperor Tamarin from our book ‘Flooded’. We have been using all four sentence types to write persuasively.
Year 4: We have used our imagining tools to use water related idioms to write speeches in role as a character from our story flooded. We had to think outside the box for this activity, as the idioms we were using all had metaphorical meanings which were quite tricky to use. We also used our collaboration tools to support each other in delivering our speeches to the class.
Year 5: We have used our asking questions and planning tools to investigate what factors affect how quickly a solid dissolves in water. We used our collaboration tool to work together in small groups to carry out the experiment and we found that the sugar dissolved fastest when it was in granulated form, in hot water and being continuously stirred.
Year 6: We have enjoyed reading our new text ‘Leila and the Blue Fox’ so far. On Monday we discovered a backpack left in our classroom! Using our asking questions and making links tools we explored who it could belong to. After we made our predictions, we met our first character – Miso the fox – a beautiful arctic fox on an incredible journey, we then created poems using a variety of figurative language.

Harvest Festival
On Friday 4 October Y1 – Y6 will be going to St.Stephen’s Church to celebrate the Harvest Festival of thanksgiving. This year, the church and Dulwich Wood Primary School are supporting the local charity SDCCAS – the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers https://sdcas.org.uk/
We invite Dulwich Wood pupils to donate a non-perishable item. Pupils will carry their item to church and place it in front of the altar as part of the service. Your support is much appreciated and will make a tremendous difference to asylum seekers and refugees living in our local area. We look forward to you joining us.
The SDCCAS Centre provides safe spaces for clients to access free, holistic services. They provide hot lunches, advice and support around health, housing, immigration, education and employment, and a range of social and wellbeing activities.
All Parents/Carers are welcome to attend the service from 9am – 9:30am.
