Learning Journey – ‘Foundations

A snapshot of our week:

Reception: First of all, we would like to say a great big thank you to all the wonderful parent helpers that supported us in making our school trip an absolute success! It was an amazing start to what has been an exciting and fun week in Reception. The kids were so inspired by our school trip that they have not stopped speaking, drawing and writing about it! In maths we have been exploring a new tool called ‘rekenrek’, which has helped the children to further develop their subitising skills and has also provided a great opportunity for them to use their reasoning learning tool. Our fantastic week was rounded up with the kids having a great time at the Fun Run!

Year 1 had a special delivery of a big basket of delicious fruit to try and a new book to enjoy in our literacy lessons (Handa’s Surprise).  The children especially enjoyed trying the tangy, purple passion fruit and the sweet, soft mango.  We thought of a variety of adjectives to describe the fruit’s appearance, texture and flavour.  In science we were observing what had been eating the plants around the school.  When we spotted so many ripe strawberries, we picked one each and then added on our observation sheets that not only minibeasts had been munching the plants and fruit in the garden but children too!  On Wednesday the children used their Dulwich Wood Tool Kit during their visit to the Horniman Museum.  During the toy workshop they used their asking questions, making links and collaboration tools as they explored the toys together.  A big thank you to our 13 parent volunteers who helped facilitate the trip, we all had a lovely day!

Year 2: What a great fantastic week of learning we had! In literacy, we have finished writing and editing our own story of the Tadpole’s promise and we had some great titles, such as The Chameleon’s promise, The Kitten’s promise, The Chick’s promise. We have used a range of powerful verbs as well as words with suffixes to make our writing more interesting.  In Maths, we have used our perseverance tool to consolidate telling the time, using time related language: quarter past, quarter to and half past, and we have begun to calculate simple time durations.

Year 3 have immersed themselves into the magical world of Leon and the Place Between. Their imagining tools are working overtime as they create their own mystical settings. We have been blown away by some of impressive work they have produced. We are also very excited to begin our exploration into the Roman Empire in History. We have been making lots of links! In Science, we are mesmerized by all things magnetic! We have tested out lots of different types of magnets and used our planning tool to come up with ideas for investigations to answer our big questions.

Year 4 at the start of the week we wrote fact files about The Ancient Egyptians by organising our ideas into paragraphs like religions, appearance, leisure activities and food. We also completed out MTC (multiplication tables check) and reasoning papers. On Tuesday we went on an AMAZING trip to the Velodrome in Herne Hill, many of us used our perseverance tools to learn how to ride a bike. We all had fun even when it was hard. Kids who persevered the most won special Jerseys. We started our topic in maths which was time, we learnt new vocabulary such as interval. After that, we wrote letters of thanks to the Velodrome organisers and helpers (daddy day-care). Special thanks to Mrs Jary for leading and helping us all on the day. Finally, in science we continued learning about states of matter and carried out research to discover the different melting points of solids. What a great week! (Written by Dino and Joey 4B)

Year 5 have had another fun filled week! We have started our maths topic on coordinates and the children are already shinning! We are continuing to read The Sleeper and the Spindle, our alternative fairy-tale. The children have been thinking carefully about the effect of the clause order in sentences and have even been using the subjunctive mood. On Wednesday, many Year 5 children took part in the LPESSN rounders competition and came second. What an amazing achievement! They persevered through the blazing sunshine and through the competition, but most importantly they were empathetic towards others, respectful and wonderfully behaved. Some children remained at school, to do Design & Technology. We had a very calm, yet fun day, designing and making our very own slippers, all in one day! We are hoping to sell these at the Summer Fair. We look forward to seeing you there, if you would like to purchase your child’s hand-crafted slippers.

Year 6 have had an excellent week. To start it off, we had our weekly hip-hop lesson, where we’re starting to make our own music! Over this term, we have been studying the Ancient City of Benin, which has been eye opening to say the least. We have been looking at primary and secondary sources including artefacts that are held at the British Museum. Following this, we are going to use our making links tool and write a time travellers guide to the Ancient City of Benin. On Thursday, we had an amazing transition workshop, helping us prepare for secondary school. Even though there were a few technical difficulties, the session was still really enjoyable.
