Learning Journey – ‘Foundations
A snapshot of our week:
Reception: this has been an exciting week in Reception, as we continue to expand on our knowledge about the Great Fire of Tooley Street. On Tuesday, Mr Chris took reception for a walk around our school where he explained to the children all the fire safety measures that are in place to keep them safe in school. We then learnt about James Braidwood, who is considered the ‘father of our modern Fire Brigade’. The children were fantastic at making links with what they learnt with Mr Chris and some of Mr Braidwood’s ideas, which then helped them create some great posters about fire safety.
Year 1 couldn’t believe how much their pea seeds had grown over the holidays! We used our reasoning tools to discuss how they’d changed from a seed to a plant, and we have finished documenting the changes in our seed diaries. We used our reasoning tools again when we programmed our ‘beebots’ to move forward, turn left, right and we even looked at quarter and half turns! We’re looking forward to seeing your photos from the markets for the home learning projects, so we can compare them with markets in Kenya which we will be studying in a couple of weeks.
Year 2 have been using their imagining tool, they have planned their very own version of ‘Tadpole’s Promise’ by Jeannie Wilson. It is a love story with a very funny ending! They are looking forward to writing their narrative using a range of adventurous word choices and inverted commas for speech! So, watch this space! In Maths, we have been using our perseverance tool to help us in reading and writing time using an analogue clock. We have looked at O’clock, half past and quarter to. Adults at home if you can support your child by reading analogue clocks, that will be a fantastic way to consolidate their learning!
Year 3 have used their empathy goggles to learn about World Oceans Day and how important the oceans are for the future of the planet. We focused on the impact single use plastic is having on the oceans and the wildlife found in and around them. Year 3 were really passionate about wanting to help and make a difference. It would be great if you could ask you child what they learnt and what their World Oceans Day pledge is!
Year 4 have started a new book, The Story of Tutankhamun and we are really getting our teeth into our history topic, the ancient Egyptians, making especially good use of our making links tool. Many children in Year 4 have prior knowledge of the Egyptians and it has been wonderful to watch the children build connections between old knowledge and new learning. We have also been making links between our history topic and Rivers, our geography topic, by learning how important the River Nile was to the ancient Egyptian civilisation. We are continuing with our preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check, again making and building strong links to prior learning. Yesterday was an RE day and we had great fun learning about how and why people get married, we compared what happens in different religions and cultures. We made Hindu wedding garlands, talked to staff members who are and aren’t married, we made our own vows and had very interesting discussions around arranged marriages and generally the pro’s and con’s of getting married!!
Year 5 have, surprisingly loved this week completing assessment papers to support teacher assessment ready for the big step up into year 6. They have focussed and persevered, their grades are showing that they have all tried their very best. The whole year group was given a big clap in celebration assembly this morning! In PSHE Year 5 have been looking at healthy lifestyles and been giving advice on why it’s not good to smoke, why it’s not great to vape and the possible health dangers relating to alcohol.
Well done to the KS2 children who represented Dulwich Wood at the basketball tournament, they did well and came third place. Also, the children who took part in the Quad Athletics, our children were competing against older children but tried so hard and despite being at a disadvantage managed to score in all the rounds. A special mention to Brooke who ran super-fast and won his heat by miles! Looking forward now to next week’s rounders tournament!
Year 6 started reading a new book called, ‘The Children of the Benin Kingdom’. We had to learn how to pronounce some of the names but thankfully we had some experts in the class; we are enjoying the book so far! We had our weekly visit from Grounded Movement, who are working with the Crystal Palace Festival, they taught everyone (even the teachers) some new dance moves. A music producer joined us this week and we began the process of making our own music, generating beats by using our voices. On Wednesday, it was World Oceans Day so we decided to write a letter to our local MP Helen Hayes to suggest some ways that could persuade our community to reduce or stop using plastic. The highlight, this week, was our trip to the British Museum where we were able to see ancient artefacts from the Kingdom of Benin which were over 1,000 years old. What an amazing experience!
