Learning Journey – ‘Foundations’

It may have rained a lot this week we all still found ways to spark some joy!  Mr Chris took this incredible photo of our playground!

For those families who are inspired by the National Jubilee celebrations next week we are extending the deadline for our Jubilee art competition until Tuesday 7th June, remember there is a grown-up’s category too!

A snapshot of our week:

Reception: following up from our story about The Great Fire of Tooley Street, we have been focusing on learning some of the differences between life in Victorian times and in the present. The children have been very interested to find out what life was like without washing machines, central heating or water pipes at home. Then we had a short pause in our story and spent two days learning all about Queen Elizabeth II to prepare for the Jubilee celebrations! Please don’t forget to draw, paint or collage a portrait of the Queen! On Monday 13th June we are going on a boat trip on the Thames, the trip costs £4.50 please give permission and pay via Schools Buddy.

Year 1 have been using their collaboration tool in maths, working together to make sequences of instructions using positional language to direct their partner from one point of the classroom to another.  They are very excited about the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and have been using their planning tool to help plan an afternoon of activities to celebrate this special event.   It has been exciting to check on our pea seeds each day and notice their changes, most of them have sprouted roots and shoots.   We are looking forward to going to the Horniman Museum on Wednesday 15th June, we will be needing parent volunteers to come with us.  If you are able to keep the day free and come along that would be marvellous, please respond and pay £3 contribution via Schools Buddy.

Year 2  were extremely happy when we came to class on Monday to find out that our lovely butterflies had finally emerged from their cocoons. We then used our planning tool in literacy to help us plan and write the retell of our story, “Tadpole’s Promise” by Jeanne Willis. We used some fantastic expanded noun phrases to make it more engaging for the reader.  In maths, we have been consolidating place value by partitioning numbers into different combinations. We have also been using our knowledge of times tables as a strategy to solve division problems. We are looking forward to our trip to the mosque on June 20th, this trip costs £2.50 please complete the permission slip and pay on Schools Buddy.

Year 3 used our perseverance and collaboration tools on Monday when, in teams, we started to build our volcanoes! It was such fun and the results were really impressive! After the volcanoes had dried, we finished our book; Escape from Pompeii and watched an animation of the last day in Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius exploded. We then exploded our volcanoes with volcanic explosion sound effects in the background! We learnt about chemical reactions! In literacy, we have used our imagining tool to rewrite Escape from Pompeii but with an alternate ending! Ask your child what they decided would happen instead! We are so looking forward to our trip to Herne Hill Velodrome on June 21st, this trip costs £5 please reserve a place and pay £5 via Schools Buddy.

Year 4 we have been using our imagining tool brilliantly to write our own versions of Gulliver’s Travels in literacy. The children have written some fabulous stories and we have been blown away by their creativity! We have continued with our topic on money in maths, calculating change and ordering amounts, and applying our understanding to real life contexts. Alongside our topic of money, we have also revisited our times tables practise in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check, which we will be doing after half term. Over the half term, please encourage the children to practise any times table that they do not feel comfortable with, it will really help to build their confidence. We are really looking forward to our trip to Herne Hill Velodrome on June 14th, this trip costs £5.00 please give details of your child’s riding capabilities and pay via Schools Buddy.

Year 5 started out their week with an exciting trip to the British Museum. The children were, of course, wonderfully behaved at the museum and on public transport. We explored the Anglo-Saxon and Viking room, hunting for different artefacts, evidence of trade and different materials used. We have continued to read our alternative fairy tale, the Sleeper and the Spindle. The children became estate agents, selling the castle, using various descriptive devices. In maths, we have started our topic about properties of shapes, identifying, comparing and specifically describing their features. In history we are exploring the beliefs of the Vikings, looking at Yggdrasil, which is what they believed to be a scared tree, housing the nine realms/worlds.

A huge congratulations to the mixed key stage 2 dance team who competed in the Southwark dance competition, the amazing dance was choregraphed by the children under the close direction of Holly in Y6. The team came 3rd out of 12 schools, a fantastic result as most of their competitors had professional dancers choreographing their routines.

Year 6 have been mastering the use of their imagining tool! Last week we went on a trip to Chessington World of Adventures to explore the workings of the rides. We looked at the different mechanisms each ride used to make it move, where the riders sat and the overall design of each ride. During DT, we applied our newly-found knowledge to designing our own fairground rides. We also used our making links tool – linking our prior knowledge of circuits and applying it in our own rides. Some of us have designed swinging chair rides, merry-go-rounds and Ferris wheels, using a combination of wheels and axles, pulleys and a motor to make our rides move! We will be moving on to the decoration stage very soon.
