Learning Journey – ‘Freedom’

A snapshot of our week:

Reception have now concluded our work around the story Halibut Jackson. We’ve had a busy week practising for our Christmas show, the children have been fantastic at learning all the songs! They also really enjoyed a special Yoga session on Thursday and a wonderful festive Christmas lunch on Friday, we have never seen so many Christmas jumpers!

Year 1 have had a fantastic week full of nativity song practice, relaxing yoga and Christmas jumper day! Don’t worry – we managed to fit lots of learning in too… In Literacy, we used our Dulwich Wood Learning Toolkits to write posters and leaflets on how to make the world a better place. It’s amazing to see how far the children have come in their writing from the beginning of the year to now. We’ve been exploring different ways to build numbers to 20 and we’d love your help at home to make sure that your children can count forwards and backwards to 20 with confidence. We really enjoyed using our reasoning tool in science to examine the similarities and differences between the teeth of herbivores and carnivores, and we were surprised to see that omnivores were a mixture of both!

Year 2 have been using our planning tool to help us plan a “Save the Planet” campaign. We started by doing some research on the importance of protecting our Earth. We learnt words such as sustainability and renewable energies, please have a chat to your children about the campaign, we think you will find their views very interesting. We have even used rhetorical questions to make our audience reflect about this serious issue. In maths, we started to learn about money, becoming familiar with all the British coins and notes. In fact, we were really surprised to see that there is a £50 pound note. We are also starting to add money in pounds and pence. Please include your children in any home activities like shopping which involves using money. In science, we have been talking about the benefits of physical exercise and how it effects our heart rate. We have also been learning all our songs for our Christmas performance “Whoops a Daisy, Angel”. We can’t wait to have you watching us, next week.

Year 3 went on their first school trip of the year to visit a local synagogue. The Rabbai was brilliant and the children were amazing. Year 3 were a credit to the school, they were well behaved and respectful and more importantly, they were interested and asked LOTS and LOTS of questions! I think they also impressed the Rabbai with their knowledge of Judaism!

Year 4 began our week with an amazing performance of African drumming, which showcased the talents of our wonderful children, they were brilliant and can be very proud of themselves! In writing we have focused on science, as we have been writing up the results of our recent experiments, starting with the results our egg and vinegar experiment. We found that the vinegar had completely dissolved the calcium in the shell of one of our eggs, making a ‘bouncy’ egg that was pale and misshapen. We had great fun comparing it to a normal egg! We therefore found out what acids can do to the calcium in our teeth (nothing good)! Our other experiment was the digestive system model, where we described how each part of the model represented a different part of the human digestive system and how the model mimicked its function. In maths, we have continued to practise multiplication and division, focusing on the three- and six-times tables.

Year 5: multiplication madness strikes again in Year 5, as we have been mastering multiplying four-digit number. In our book ‘Freedom Bird’ we have been studying the main characters and their motives, one character being an overseer and the other being an enslaved little girl. Do you know why animals have pointed ears? Year 5 do as we created our own animal ears in Science to demonstrate how sound is amplified.  In PSHE we looked at why ‘Save the Children’ is a great charity and finished our whole class jigsaw puzzles. We decided that when we all work together we achieve more and linked this to all the key groups who contribute to British Society.

Year 6: inspired by the Suffragettes long battle for equality and suffrage, Year 6 have been creating their own campaigns based on current issues in the world. They have worked collaboratively to plan out their campaign and used a variety of skills to create speeches, adverts, posters, badges etc! They can’t wait to share their campaigns with the whole of Y6 next week – what a fantastic end to a fantastic learning journey! We are also super proud of all the School Councillors who worked hard at the Winter fair and are now leading the ‘Save the Children ‘Christmas charity campaign.
