Learning Journey – ‘Freedom’

 A snapshot of our week:

Reception started the week by reading ‘Teddy goes to School’. This allowed for an opportunity to discuss how children are feeling now that they’ve started Reception and as Teddy is just about to turn 5, we also had lots of chats about what is a birthday and how we celebrate them here and in other cultures as well. In maths we have been focusing on comparing amounts, size, length and height, using the mathematical language for this.

Year 1 have enjoyed making greedy crocodiles to help learn the concept of ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ in maths.  The crocodiles open their mouths wide to eat the ‘greater than’ numbers.  In Literacy we have been writing letters to Beegu giving our alien friend some good advice how to make friends.  We are ready for our trip on Tuesday in Geography we have been making ‘messy maps’, and looking at a map of Dulwich Park.

Year 2 have been using their planning and empathy tools to write a set of instructions on ‘How to Survive a Sea Journey’. In maths, we have been exploring number bonds to 10 and 20, looking at patterns and making links between numbers bonds to 10 and 100. Following our lesson on Black History Month, we have started to look at Claudia Jones and her relationship with the Nothing Hill Carnival.  We are looking forward to finding out more about the carnival.

Year 3 have been super creative this week, really used their imagining tools to create their own versions of our story; ‘The Heart and the Bottle’. We have been very impressed with the descriptive literary tools they used! We loved finding out all about the reflectiveness of materials in Science, everyone used their making links and asking questions tools and we were blown away with the different ways they chose to record the results of our comparative test. It was very impressive!

Year 4 have been writing their own versions of our story Varmints. We have planned, drafted and edited… they should be very proud of themselves, their stories are excellent! In maths we have continued to focus on place value, partitioning and comparing numbers. We have also continued learning about the Caribbean, comparing features of the Caribbean to the UK. In Science, we have continued classifying animals using scientific groups.

Year 5 have explored the history of colonisation in South Africa by creating both a glossary of key terms and a time line.  Wearing our empathy goggles, we wrote a report in role, as a court reporter during Nelson Mandela’s trial. In maths we have continued our focus on multiple step addition and subtraction problems.

Year 6 have been researching the British Empire and how far it stretched during the Victorian times. We had fun using atlases and Google to locate these countries on a map. We were surprised at just how many countries across the globe Britain had conquered! Alongside this, we have been improving our computing skills by creating information posters about our upcoming Carnival, keep on the lookout for these around the school!

Conkertition!

We have a great name for the competition suggested by Arlen (Y2)!  School Council are organising a house conker competition starting the week of Monday 4th of October. If your child wants to take part please help them find a really strong conker and put a string through it. They can then bring it into school and start practicing, you could even make a few and have your own competition on at home!!

Supporting our school community to live healthy lifestyles

As you know we are working hard to support children and staff with their wellbeing. One of the key ways in doing this is to get active!

We are offering additional PE slots each week to all classes. Where possible we will text Parents in advance of the additional PE sessions and will let children know the day before so that they can come to school in their PE kits that day.

Also, children across KS1 & KS2 will have the opportunity to get involved in interschool tournaments and competitions.

Year 2, as well as Year 6 will be going swimming this year, a big thank you to Dulwich Prep and Dulwich College for the use of their pools.

We have also invested in a fantastic PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship Education) Scheme, ‘Coram Scarf’ and are rolling it out across all year groups. SCARF stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship. The lessons are fun, interactive, collaborative, relevant and fit perfectly with our existing scheme of work.
