Learning Journey – ‘Freedom’

 A snapshot of our week:

Reception have been working with the text ‘The Colour Monster’, discussing feelings and reflecting about how certain situations make us feel, particularly as we are all now in ‘big school’. In maths we have been looking at sorting and exploring how the same things can be sorted in many different ways, e.g. by their shape, size or colour. The children have been great at finding opportunities to practise this skill during busy time!

Year 1 have had a very productive week creating posters to help find the missing alien, modelling Beegu from playdough and writing advice about how to look after her. In maths, we’ve been exploring one more and one less, and using our reasoning tool to discuss mistakes is becoming second nature to us! We are also planning a trip to Dulwich Park (5 October) to practice our Geography skills and we need Parent helpers. See separate letter for more details.

Year 2 have been using our ‘asking question’ tool when interviewing the characters from our book ‘The Owl and the Pussy- Cat’ and making sure we have been using the correct question stem followed by question marks.  Alongside this, we have started to look at contractions and the punctuation needed, which has been challenging but we have used our ‘perseverance’ tool to help overcome this. Year 2 have taken over the gardening lunch time club and are loving working with the gardeners every Thursday.

Year 3 have been finding out about light and dark this week in science, we explored how much, and what materials, we could see with different amounts of light. We collaborated brilliantly during our investigations and came up with some impressive conclusions. Thank you to Bessie who brought in a copy of her ‘Little Book of Big Freedoms’. A great link to our learning journey! We enjoyed reading it and it provoked a great discussion.

Year 4 have focussed on finding specific language and literary devices in our text Varmints, as well as making our own noun plus noun phrases. We have also been learning about the history of the Caribbean, including its indigenous population and the impacts of European colonisation and the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. In science, we have been grouping living things using Venn diagrams with a variety of categories.

Year 5 have been continuing our work on South Africa, spending time creating a newspaper report to alert the rest of the world to apartheid and what it has meant for the people of South Africa. In maths we have continued our place value focus and have been comparing and rounding numbers. In Science we have been exploring the benefits of both sexual and asexual reproduction in plants.

Year 6 have demonstrated how fantastically they can use their empathy goggles and their imagining tools as we delved further into our book ‘The Arrival’. We wrote some fantastic post cards home to loved ones really using their empathy goggles to imagine the struggles they would have faced. We are all really looking forward to seeing what happens next and whether the arrival will be able to return home to his family. The children have made fantastic links with our whole school topic of ‘Freedom’ when learning about the arrival. They have also started their Samba lessons!!

Conkertition!

We have a great name for the competition suggested by Arlen (Y2)!  School Council are organising a house conker competition starting the week of Monday 4th of October. If your child wants to take part please help them find a really strong conker and put a string through it. They can then bring it into school and start practicing, you could even make a few and have your own competition on at home!!
