Learning Journey – ‘Freedom’

A snapshot of our week:

Year 1 have had a fantastic week! It has been so lovely getting to know all the children in Miss Harriskine’s case, and Miss Angela has really enjoyed seeing those smiley faces again. Our focus since we’ve been back has been to familiarise ourselves with our new environment, and we’re getting really good at using our collaboration tool to work together in activities, tidy up, and discuss what we are learning with our partners.

Year 2 have had a great start to the year! We started our Learning Journey with a discussion about what freedom means to every single one of us. Using our empathy googles we came up with words such as “respect” and “independence” which helped us make links with our class rules.

Year 3 have had an excellent start to the new year. We started our learning journey; freedom, by writing acrostic poems and sharing our ideas about what freedom means to each of us. We began our year of Science by looking at all the freedoms the world of Science has given us! The children had some great ideas! We also talked about how knowing our times tables can give our brain the freedom to feel more confident about Maths.

Year 4 have had a wonderful first full week back in school, getting to know one another and setting expectations. We have explored the meaning of the word ‘Freedom’, which is our learning journey this term. We used our empathy goggles to imagine what freedom might mean to others, as well as identified the theme of ‘Freedom’ in a range of images. We then wrote our own personal definitions of freedom.

Year 5 have returned to school more enthusiastic than ever! We began our Learning Journey about ‘Freedom’ by sharing our thoughts on what freedom means to us. We have been revisiting maths topics and have really persevered throughout the week to recall all our knowledge!

Year 6 have really WOWed us this week. We have had some thought-provoking lessons linked to our learning journey topic – Freedom. We have absolutely loved the discussions that have taken place in both classrooms and admire the empathy that the children have demonstrated when discussing the lives of others.

School Council

The School Council were recently voted in by all the children from Y1 – Y6. The speeches prepared by all the children that took part were outstanding! We couldn’t be more impressed with our Year 6 children this year.

A message from School Council:

Dear Dulwich Wood,

As a School Council we would like our school to continue to feel safe and happy. We will use our learning tools always, not only in our learning but in how we act towards our peers. It is important to us that everything is equal and fair. We are very grateful for this opportunity, and it has really helped to boost our confidence.

Yours sincerely,

The Dulwich Wood School Council

Birthdays

As a healthy school we would like to relaunch a fantastic way of celebrating children’s birthdays (as well as singing to them and making them feel special) – without all of the sugary cakes and sweets!

We would like children to donate a book to their class on their birthday, rather than bringing in cakes or snacks, as this is a lovely way for the children to enjoy something that will last, and will benefit the class for the rest of the year.  When your child brings in a birthday book, we will add a book plate at the front with their name and birthday before the book goes into their class reading corner. There is no requirement to donate a book – it is purely voluntary.

Polite reminder: we are not able to hand out cakes or sweets or other treats for children’s birthdays, so please do not send them in.
