Learning Journey – ‘Freedom’

 A snapshot of our week:

Reception: we now have our two Reception classes in full! We have been delighted to see how the children have been settling in, learning the new school routines and getting to know the environment as well as meeting lots of new friends. Well done everyone, for a great start!

Year 1: we have been investigating the clues linked to a spaceship that arrived unexpectedly!  We thought of lots of questions we would like to ask about why it has landed here and who is on it? In maths we have been counting and linking quantity to number representations.  We are getting very good at subitising (where we can see how many objects there are without having to count them all one by one).

Year 2: we have been exhausting our empathy tool this week. In literacy, when planning and writing a diary entry as the cat from the Owl and the Pussycat, and in science when discussing the importance of science and the traits that make a good scientist. Linking to our Freedom topic, we have also used this tool to discuss the rights and responsibilities that each one of us have both in and outside the school community.

Year 3: this week we finished reading our story; The Heart and the Bottle and started planning our version of the story. We brainstormed which emotions we could put in different containers and the children had some amazing ideas which they are really excited about. In Science we have started investigating light and in Geography, we are learning about Africa, to start we shared what we already know about the continent of Africa and what we would like to find out.

Year 4: we have started reading our story Varmints, we watched a short film based around the book to inspire our writing. We have been using a range of descriptive phrases and explored personification in literacy. We have also started our geography topic on the Caribbean, locating countries on a map, and, best of all we are learning how to play the African drums!

Year 5: have been focusing on place value in maths and have started to explore 5-digit numbers. In Literacy we have been focusing on the present perfect tense and have been applying this to write first person accounts of what it would be like to be a Xhosa child. In Science we have started to explore our topic of living things and their habitats, we looked carefully at gladioli and compared them to sunflowers and learnt about how they reproduce. In RE we found out all about the Animal’s Law Suit against the humans.

Year 6: have had another fantastic week; School Council had their first meeting and they have already planned lots of exciting events.! We have started our book The Arrival by Shaun Tan, it’s based around the idea of immigration and freedom. We have become pro’s at using our empathy goggles, putting ourselves in the shoes of asylum seekers and refugees. We have explored what it would have been like to leave our families behind, embarking on often treacherous journeys to have a better life. We have also enjoyed our computing lessons, where have been learning how to use Microsoft Office.

Birthdays

As a healthy school we would like to relaunch a fantastic way of celebrating children’s birthdays (as well as singing to them and making them feel special) – without all of the sugary cakes and sweets!

We would like children to donate a book to their class on their birthday, rather than bringing in cakes or snacks, as this is a lovely way for the children to enjoy something that will last, and will benefit the class for the rest of the year.  When your child brings in a birthday book, we will add a book plate at the front with their name and birthday before the book goes into their class reading corner. There is no requirement to donate a book – it is purely voluntary.

Polite reminder: we are not able to hand out cakes or sweets or other treats for children’s birthdays, so please do not send them in.
