Spring Term Learning Journey – All the World’s a Stage
Reception: as it is British Science Week, we have been learning lots about the different seasons, focusing on Spring. We have turned into real spring detectives, using our making links tool to investigate our environment, trying to spot all the signs of spring around us, like buds, flowers, shoots and blossom. We have also been listening out for birds and bugs. We have learnt about some baby animals, changes in daylight and weather, including the crazy spring showers and sunny spells. We have been making collages with natural resources, watching videos, reading spring stories and writing about what we love about this season!
Year 1: in history we have been learning all about schools from the past and using our making links tool to think of the similarities and differences we see from schools today. We learnt about the rules and consequences they had in Victorian schools, such as ‘children must stand when an adult enters the room’ and ‘children must use their right hand at all times for writing.’ We’re not sure we’d like to go to school in the Victorian era!
Year 2 have loved using their making links tool in history and literacy. In history, we have been learning all about influential monarchs and were really excited to learn that Shakespeare – who we were learning about in English – was alive during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, and Mary Seacole – who we have been writing about this week – was alive during the reign of Queen Victoria. Our picture of British History is getting broader each week!
Year 3 have been using their reasoning tool to work out how our shadows change depending on the time of day. We collaborated excellently in groups and drew around different objects every hour. Unfortunately the clouds arrived after lunch but we still had a great time!
Year 4 have spent this week using their planning and imagining tools to write their own narrative stories based on the Iron Man. We have done really well following our plans and using fronted adverbials to start our sentences.
Year 5 have been using their asking questions and making links tools this week as we began our investigation on metamorphosis for British Science Week. We are investigating the changes that take place as a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. We discussed what we wondered and recorded our first observations!
Year 6 had a dramatic start to the week on our trip to the Globe Theatre. We had an amazing time exploring the theatre itself and even had the opportunity to watch some of the actors rehearse for Macbeth – live on stage! We then participated in a very active workshop based around Romeo and Juliet, where we had the opportunity to use our collaboration tool and act out some of the scenes. Back in class, we are nearing the end of our text ‘The Wind in the Wall’. We have written dramatic action scenes between the two main characters, using our imagining tool to create descriptive reported clauses.
PE Update
Running Club

Running Club ran over Cox’s Walk footbridge which has recently reopened after a long-term renovation. Mr Greenwood mentioned that the paths are getting less muddy and many are being renewed so that it’s easier to access the woods! If you have time this weekend maybe you could explore the woods!
Hockey

Last week Dulwich Wood attended Southwark Quick Sticks Hockey Championships. We had 3 teams participating in the tournament. We came 2nd and 3rd place overall, narrowly missing out in the final 4-3. All the children performed brilliantly!
Girls’ Football

Last week The FA held the biggest ever girls’ football day across the nation. To celebrate, Southwark had their biggest tournament ever with over 120 girls competing from more than 20 schools. On the day, there could only be one winner and that was Dulwich Wood!! They won every game! Mr Sean and Miss Sinead are very proud of what our girls continue to achieve in PE.
