Learning Journey – Sustain to Remain

Happy Number Day 2024! A huge thank you to Miss Oliveira for organising such a fun day for everyone and to Ilara (Y4) and her Mum for making the numbers day badges. We have raised over £100 for the NSPCC. Today has been extra special thanks to Carole, Cass’s Mum (Y2) and her team who re-launched Fruity Friday with a one off menu including hot chocolate and brioche buns!
Fruity Friday will be back on each week and Carole will need volunteers, please contact her via the Year 2 WhatsApp group or the School Office if you would like to help out.
A Snapshot of our Week…
Reception: We have finished ‘The Magic Paintbrush’ by Julia Donaldson. Inspired by Shen’s victory over the greedy emperor by painting a fierce, mighty dragon, the children let their imaginations soar, creating and labelling their own fantastic dragons! Then they gave them some wonderful, imaginative dragon names. This year is the year of the Dragon, we will be having a Chinese inspired school lunch on Fri 9th Feb to celebrate Chinese New Year!
Year 1: We have been using our empathy tool with our new book ‘Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish’ to write some clear instructions on how to look after our planet. The children have been making links between the book and our learning journey ‘Sustain to Remain’ to think about how we can care for and protect our local area.
Year 2: We have really been using our perseverance and imagining tools in computing this week. We have loved starting our learning on Scratch Junior and, even though it can be really challenging, we are amazing coders already!
Year 3: We have written vivid descriptions of Mount Vesuvius erupting and destroying Pompeii. We then interviewed the main characters of our story using our empathy goggles. We have also made our own model volcanoes, which will ‘erupt’ next week!Â

Year 4: We’ve had our science lesson at Dulwich Prep this week, all the Teachers were so impressed with the children’s knowledge and understanding of evaporation, condensation, melting and heating substances. They had a great time checking their predictions!
Year 5: We have used our planning, reasoning and collaboration tools to develop more and more sophisticated computer games, using Scratch. Our increasing understanding of programming and algorithms is giving us much more confidence to explore our ideas and be creative!
Year 6: We have begun our new text, The Wind in the Wall, a Gothic tale about an exotic spiky fruit (The Pineapple). We have enjoyed delving into the Gothic genre, exploring the variety of language and themes. We have been using our imagining tool, creating abstract Gothic setting descriptions.
RE at Dulwich Wood

Thank you to Father Bernard who came to talk to the children in Y4 about why the bible is so important to Christians. Father Bernhard helped us make links to the special books in other religions and wowed us all by reading in German, Hebrew and Greek!
Share & Care: Time to relax (using numbers!)

School Uniform
At Dulwich Wood we have always tried to get the balance between comfort, practicality and identity. We want our children to feel comfortable in their school uniform but also to look like they belong to this school.
Please support us with this by ensuring that what your child wears for school fits within these parameters. We do expect every child to wear a school jumper or fleece, a yellow polo shirt or PE T-shirt and something grey or black on their bottom half. We sell blue jogging bottoms with the school logo which are also permitted. Please see our uniform guidance for more information.
