Autumn Term Learning Journey – Stand By Me

Reception:

This week we have been reading ‘The Colour Monster’, which sparked some lovely discussions about the different feelings we all naturally experience in certain moments. We spent the rest of the week exploring the ‘Zones of Regulation’, discussing how we can manage some of these emotions in a positive way and the strategies we can use to help ourselves feel calm and happy again. We talked about how being calm helps us to be ready to learn, enjoy playing and, of course, use our empathy goggles to notice how our friends are feeling and help them feel good too!

Year 1

Y1 have been using their imagining tool this week to write a description of Beegu. It was great to see the children collaborating in small groups to put together the picture of Beegu and identify the body parts to later use adjectives to describe them. What amazing writing year 1!

Year 2

Y2 have enjoyed exploring microhabitats as part of our ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’ topic. We were excited to discover a variety of bugs and mini-beasts and thought carefully about what they need to survive in their habitats. In literacy, we have been using our imagining and perseverance learning tools to write exclamations that show surprise and excitement. We then used these ideas to create a poem about the Earth, inspired by the wonderful book ‘Here We Are‘. It has been a busy and exciting week of learning!

Year 3

Y3 have had a brilliant week! Using our imagining tool, we wrote creative and entertaining dialogue between our story’s main character and Sparky the Sloth, bringing their personalities to life through conversation. In maths, we used our making links tool to deepen our understanding of place value by connecting new learning to what we already know. We also enjoyed learning about the incredible Ella Fitzgerald, discovering how her talent and determination made her one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time.

Year 4

In Y4, we have practised our oracy skills by delivering speeches we wrote ourselves, in role. We visited the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton to further imagine the lives of the Windrush Generation and handle some artefacts from the mid-20^th century. In maths, we used our reasoning tools to master Roman Numerals to 100!

Year 5

Y5 have had an action-packed week, tackling challenging rounding problems in maths and stepping into Nelson Mandela’s shoes in writing, using our empathy goggles and imagining tool to write diary entries about his experiences in prison. In whole-class reading we discovered the powerful story of Olaudah Equiano and his role in the fight to abolish slavery.

Year 6

Y6 are loving their steel pan lessons with Miss Drummond – they’re really starting to find their groove! They have also been using their perseverance and managing distractions tools whilst taking part in their first practice SATs sessions. They all tried so hard and we are very proud of them.
