Learning Journey – Represent Us
A Snapshot of our Week…
Reception have continued to work around the story ‘Weirdo’. We have been thinking about what makes us special and different, and how important it is for all of us to feel loved and accepted for who we are. The children have used their empathy goggles to write lots of lovely messages of kindness and acceptance to their friends, as well as thinking about how Maud learns that she is not a ‘weirdo’, she’s just herself and she doesn’t need to change who she is to be accepted and valued.
Year 1 were really surprised and excited to see how tall our peas grew over the weekend. We have continued to closely observe them and have started to replant them into bigger containers ready to take home next week – we can’t wait to share them with you! We have used our making links and asking questions tool to continue learning about Rosa Parks and we found out about all of the different places where segregation happened in America during that period.
Year 2 had a wonderful time at Dulwich Prep listening to CBBC presenter Andy Day read us a snippet of his first book- ‘Dino Dad’. We even has a master class from illustrator Steven Lenton and drew our own dinosaurs! Year 2 used their asking questions tool to find out all about being an author. A huge thank you to Sarah and Ilona, the librarians at Dulwich prep for inviting us!
Year 3 have used their planning tools to sequence the story of Our Tower and create their own copies of the book to publish their stories into. We have also used our reasoning and asking questions tools to investigate which materials around the classroom will be attracted to magnets.
Year 4 have used their imagining tools to create a character and write an exciting, suspense-filled start to their version of their book ‘Varmints’. In science, we have been using our reasoning tools to decide which teeth we use to eat certain foods, as well as identifying animals by their teeth!
Year 5 have been using their asking questions and making links tools in geography. We have been thinking about our local area, using different types of maps and then getting out to explore the different amenities around the school.
Congratulations and a massive well done to Year 6, who completed their long awaited SATs tests! They have used their entire Dulwich Wood Learning Toolkit to work their way through different papers, making links to previous learning, managing their distractions to stay focused and using their empathy goggles when supporting each other.
Share & Care
Claire in 3A has created this beautiful collage, where she painted the sky, grass and sun and cut out some clouds and glued it all together. Claire wanted to paint a flower because flowers make her happy. She hopes this picture makes other children happy too.
Thank you Claire, for sharing your happy, bright and thoughtful picture with us. (Alma)
School Games Gold Mark Award
We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award again for another academic year. A huge well done and thank you to Mr Seán and Sinéad for collecting and submitting all the evidence which led to Dulwich Wood gaining this award. Many people contribute to the Sports at Dulwich Wood, Miss Rowe teaches swimming, Miss Shaw, with the support of Mrs Jary, Mr Greenwood and Amelie’s Dad, leads before school running club, Miss Edina for coaching netball and supporting at all the competitions. Also to Mr Dash and Derrick, from Kingsdale, for spending their Tuesday lunchtimes coaching girls football (we won the Southwark girls football trophy last season!!). Thank you to Dulwich College for providing free hockey coaching on a Sunday morning for UKS2 Dulwich Wood pupils and for funding Phoenix Academy coaching staff to come into Dulwich Wood to train our hockey team, which is representing Southwark at the London School Games later this year!
PE Update
LKS2 Gymnastics just missed out on the medals this week with a 4th place in the Southwark gymnastics competition, it was the first time most of the team had competed and Mr Sean said he couldn’t have asked for more from them. Well done!
