Learning Journey – ‘Freedom’

 A snapshot of our week:

Reception worked hard to come up with their own version of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ and they then loved performing it for the other class! We also had our first Big Write last Thursday where the children were able to apply their phonics knowledge in a piece of writing. In maths, we have been deepening our knowledge of numbers looking at what is one more and one less.

Year 1 have had lots of fun this week creating our carnival head pieces and learning about the life of the sporting hero Marcus Rashford. In literacy, we’ve been writing commands, and we each wrote a guide on ‘How to become an Astronaut’ which was inspired by our book ‘Astro Girl’. We particularly liked the fact about astronauts having to eat food in tubes because of zero gravity! We’re developing our confidence in using our reasoning tool during maths to work out the different fact families to ten, especially when we learnt that the equal symbol can also come at the beginning of a number sentence!

Year 2 had another terrific week using their Empathy tool to plan and write a diary entry as Julian from our ‘Julian is a Mermaid’ book, which gave us the inspiration for our “under the sea” carnival theme. Thanks to all those who created their carnival costumes based on last week’s tapestry message. Please check tapestry for the new home learning project to be completed during the half term. In maths we have been consolidating addition using a number line and we are now ready to move onto subtraction.

Year 3 have been creating their stories about unusual pets! What fantastic imaginations they have! The stories have been great to read! We have also been investigating the effects of the sun and which materials we could use to make sunglasses in preparation to design our own! We have made links between Science and RE and have been finding out about the significance of light in religion.

Year 4 finished reading Tar Beach and wrote our own versions of the story as play scripts. To do this, we investigated the features of a play script and practised giving stage directions. In maths, we have continued with addition and subtraction using the column method and practised solving missing number questions. We have spent much of our afternoons preparing for carnival, making carnival head-dresses, Caribbean flags and even colourful wings!

Year 5 continued to focus on statistics and data handling, creating different sorts of graphs, tables and timetables to solve problems and investigate when they are used in real life contexts. In literacy we have been looking at a non-traditional fairy tale called ‘Powerless’ and have been inspired to create our own narrative story. We finished our last session of PSHE about Relationships and had great fun reflecting on what we have learnt and all the games we have played. We have been spending our geography time this week publishing our South Africa travel brochures.

Year 6 started our new text ‘Sulwe’ written by academy award winning Lupita Nyong’o. Sulwe was born the colour of midnight and was ashamed of her skin. We wrote character descriptions and diary entries using our empathy goggles, some of which were incredibly heartfelt. In Science, we completed our bread investigation, which produced really gross results! We discovered multiple strains of mould on our slices of bread, we then carried out more research on the different types of mould they could be. What a great way to end the term!

KS2 Choir

We are delighted to announce that we now have an Upper and a Lower Key Stage 2 Choir at Dulwich Wood! Our Choir Teacher is Mrs Andrews, a huge thanks to Dulwich College for lending her to us! She has asked that all children in choir watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCmvz8rDYVU in preparation for a song they will be learning next half term. Maybe if you use your making links tool you will be able to guess why?

PE Provision at Dulwich Wood

We are continuing to increase our PE provision by offering swimming to Year 2 next term and yoga taster sessions for all the children. The yoga sessions will take place on a Tuesday (Y3.4.5 Tuesday 2nd Nov, Y5, Y6 Tuesday 9th, Y1,2 Tuesday 11th), children will need PE kit on those days. Several parents have commented that the additional PE is great but hard to remember as it is not always weekly, if in doubt children can just come to school in their school PE kit, Dulwich Wood branded tracksuit bottoms will be on sale soon!
