Learning Journey: Sense of Community
Our Learning this week:

Reception: This has been a truly special week in Reception, packed with exciting events and lots of learning about different cultures! We started the week by learning about the upcoming festival of Diwali and finished having a fantastic Anansi workshop as part of Black History Month. We didn’t think the week could get any better, but then on Thursday we had our amazing Sorting Hat Ceremony. What a fantastic week to end Reception’s first half term!
Year 1: Beegu has now left Dulwich Wood and has flown back home with her parents! We decided to make a fact file all about her so if she ever decides to visit again, others would know who she is and what she enjoys. The children used their imagining tool to think about what different foods Beegu likes to eat and where Beegu lives. We used adventurous adjectives to add more details to our fact files. Great work!
Year 2: We have been using our making links and perseverance tools in maths to add two digits together by first making 10. Knowing our number bonds to 10 has really helped us to be pros this week. This method was quite challenging to begin with, but we feel so proud now we are out of the learning pit!
Year 3: We have been using our perseverance and reasoning tools in maths to learn the column method. We have been using all sorts of resources to exchange our tens and hundreds, and we are starting to feel pretty confident with it!
Year 4: We concluded our topic on the Windrush by using our reasoning and empathy tools to convince Miss Rowe that we should celebrate Windrush Day in school next year. Watch this space!

Inspired by learning about the Windrush, Astrid wrote an imaginative set of poems!
Year 5: We have been using our making links and asking questions tools this week to support us on our trip to the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton which linked with our guided reading book Black and British by David Olusoga. We looked at various paintings from the Georgian period to see what we could learn. We then found out more about Georgian Abolitionists before finally presenting the information in front of the whole class.

Year 6: This has been a week full of excitement and experiments. We used our collaboration tool during our Science day – researching facts about blood and even making some of our own in the outdoor classroom. We also used our empathy goggles when learning about the Harlem Renaissance, looking at the lives of black people during a time of change.

Football Competition: on Wednesday Dulwich Wood took 2 teams to the Southwark Y6 football competition. The B Team was a young team from Y4 who did fantastically well considering the age and size difference. They finished 2nd in their group and narrowly missed out on qualification for the semi-finals.
The A team was made up of Y5s and one Y6 child (Abu). They showed dominance from the start and were very collaborative. Their passing and team work carried them through and they beat Michael Faraday 1-0 in the semi finals and then beat Redriff 2-0 in the final. Once again we were fantastic and received compliments all day long about how good our girls were (Iman, Alexis, Binky & Lizzy).
