Spring Term Learning Journey – All the World’s a Stage

We started the week with a ‘Children’s Mental Health Week‘ Assembly. We have partnered with the charity Place 2Be and the theme this year is “Know Yourself, Grow Yourself”. Using all the emotions from Inside Out 2, some of the school council shared their experiences with that particular feeling. We also looked at the different emotions and sorted them into the correct zones. Our learning continued in our PSHE lessons. We created our own personality islands and focused on how we can understand and express our emotions. Many thanks to Miss Curwen and Miss McPherson for leading the assembly.

NSPCC Number Day
Today we had a brilliant whole school assembly about Number Day. Mr Crawford explained why we are raising money for the NSPCC and the important role that they play in supporting children. Children dressed up and donated a coin, together we have raised over £200! After assembly all classes were participating in lots of really fun maths activities! Many thanks to Alex, Jemima and Will from the NSPCC & Chris Harper for coming today to remind children of the importance of this charity!
Reception: This week we have continued to read ‘The Magic Paintbrush’. The greedy, powerful emperor has found out about Shen’s ability to use the paintbrush to bring her paintings to life. He has imprisoned Shen after she refused to paint him a tree of gold coins because the paintbrush can only be used to help the poor. We have been using our imagining tool to write in role as Shen, coming up with some great ideas to set her free from the nasty emperor.
Year 1: In science we have been learning about plants, their life cycles and what they need to survive. We were very excited to plant our beans last week and have enjoyed observing them grow shoots and roots. We used our making links and asking questions tools to order and describe each stage of a bean’s life cycle.
Year 2: This week we enjoyed making use of the outdoor classroom as we moved our germinated bean plants into pots. We used our collaboration tool to share the equipment and help each other to make sure our bean was nice and snug in its new home!
Year 3 had an amazing time creating Roman shields for our History topic this week. We had to use our planning and collaboration tools to organise ourselves into a number of Roman army formations: the tortoise, the pig’s head and the square.
Year 4 have been collaborating and reasoning to test whether different materials conduct or insulate against electricity. We discovered that the metals – including our ‘Iron Man’s arm’ – conduct electricity, as well as Mrs Harwood’s graphite pencils!
Year 5 have been using their imagining and planning tools to get into role as reporters for ‘Stage Door Magazine’ and write a character profile, celebrating the life of Ignatius Sancho. In PSHE, for Children’s Mental Health Week, we have been using our empathy tool to think about the different emotions we experience and consider what makes us unique.
Year 6 have had another great week filled with learning and excitement! We have begun our new text ‘The Wind in the Wall’, a Gothic tale about the humble pineapple. We have used our imagining tool to create our own movie posters filled with spine-tingling warnings. On Wednesday we had the opportunity to meet the Author Sam Sedgeman for the second time and he did not disappoint! He described his thrilling tales of time and the origins of Big Ben – which is the setting for one of his latest books.
