Learning Journey: Digital Explorers
Our week at Dulwich Wood:
Reception
What an incredible start to our half term! We arrived to discover that a mysterious superhero had visited, leaving behind some very important items and transforming our role play area into a Superheroes HQ!. We began reading ‘Super Milly and the Super School Day’ by Stephanie Clarkson and explored what it really means to be a superhero. We have loved dressing up and using our empathy goggles to spot real superpowers like kindness and helping others. Reception is full of everyday superheroes!
Year 1
What a fantastic first week back we’ve had in Y1! This week, we put our imagining and collaboration tools to brilliant use as we stepped into the role of architects. Inspired by ‘Iggy Peck, Architect’, we designed and built our own creative structures, just like Iggy. The classroom was filled with teamwork, problem-solving, and some wonderfully inventive ideas! We also used our empathy tool to explore the characters’ feelings, writing in the first person to really step into their shoes. It was fantastic to see the children thinking carefully about thoughts and emotions within the story.
Year 2
Y2 have really enjoyed making connections between their times table knowledge and counting money. They are now experts at making different amounts. They have also used their imagining tool to write fantastic exclamation sentences based on our new book ‘Toys in Space’.
Year 3
Y3 have started the new half term with a bang – asking questions in geography to find out about volcanoes and using our imagining tools to consider what advice we would give the characters in our new book ‘Escape from Pompeii’. We also had fun using our collaboration tool in computing to code movements for a sprite in Scratch.
Year 4
In Y4, we explored the importance of food and fasting to a range of different religions in RE. We used our making links and reasoning tools to respectfully discuss similarities and differences between different religious and world viewpoints, and showed fantastic empathy and understanding for different people’s perspectives.
Year 5
Y5 have started the Digital Explorers Learning Journey with the text ‘Hidden Figures’, learning about Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden – brilliant mathematicians who helped NASA reach space despite huge challenges. In their first lesson, the children received identity badges, explored NASA/NACA, and used our making links tool in guided reading to dive into the Race to Space. The classrooms were buzzing with excitement as our young explorers embraced curiosity, perseverance, and discovery!
Year 6
Y6 have had a great first week back. We have started a new literacy text, ‘Paradise Sands’, which the children are really enjoying. We have created fantastic narratives describing the mood and atmosphere of the story inspired by the beautiful illustrations from the book. We have also continued our science topic of ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ and conducted an experiment investigating the conditions from mould growth on bread, which is an ongoing, observational investigation.
