Autumn Term Learning Journey – Voices from the Past
Reception: The children have been chatting enthusiastically about the story ‘Look Up!’ and learning how to use ‘adjectives’, describing words that help us explain what something or someone is like. Using our making links tool, they then wrote about why they like Rocket, the main character, and enjoyed using adjectives to describe her.
Year 1: In our history lesson this week, the children have been learning all about Claudia Jones and her important role in creating the Notting Hill Carnival. The children made thoughtful links about why Claudia started the Carnival and how it brought joy and unity to the community. We also used our empathy goggles to imagine how it might have felt to be treated unfairly and to understand why Claudia’s work was so important.
Year 2 have been busy making links and collaborating this week during our trip to Dulwich Picture Gallery to visit the ArtPlay pavilion. They had a fantastic time exploring the four elements: earth, wind, fire and water.
Year 3 have been using our imagining tool this week, writing amazing setting descriptions of the tin forest in Literacy. Beech Class had fun collaborating to create maps in Sydenham Hill Woods. We really needed our perseverance tool to manage in the cold conditions! Cedar Class used their planning tool to carry out a brilliant science investigation into how objects move on different surfaces.
Year 4 had some fantastic trips to Sydenham Hill Woods, where we enthusiastically asked questions and searched for bugs on land and in the pond! We found many creatures in these habitats and also learned about how the different green spaces of London are connected. We used our making links tool to think about our recent science learning about food chains and classification.
Year 5 have been using their making links and reasoning tools in science. We investigated water resistance by exploring how the shape and streamlining of an object can affect the speed at which it travels through water. We have also been using our empathy goggles in literacy to consider which human needs are most important.
Year 6 have be using their planning and perseverance tools as well as their empathy goggles during their learning this week. They have been working hard in maths, continuing their fractions learning (multiplying and dividing fractions) working together to solve complex problems. In Literacy, they have written a persuasive speech about children’s rights to an education and their rights to live and grow, as well as a persuasive letter to the council to install a monument to the Windrush Generation. In History, they are discovering more about the Maya Civilisation and their interesting rituals.
