Autumn Term Learning Journey – Voices from the Past
Reception: This week we’ve started reading the story Look Up! The main character is a little girl called Rocket, who dreams of becoming an astronaut, so our role play area has been revamped into an exciting space station! We’ve been dressing up as astronauts, using our imagining tool to go on space adventures, and creating colourful space paintings. We even made our own leaflets to tell everyone about a meteor shower and how to get ready to watch it light up the sky!
Year 1: This week in maths we have been busy becoming Addition Experts! We’ve been exploring fact families, and using the making links tool to see how numbers are connected. The children used their prior knowledge of the part-whole model and STEM sentences like, “3 is a part, 4 is a part and the whole is 7” to help them understand a new tool: the bar model. The key idea they’ve grasped is that in every model, you need to find and add the two parts together to find the whole or total. They’ve done a fantastic job of making these links and showing great understanding!
Year 2 stepped back in time for a mysterious drama experience! Using their imagining tool and empathy goggles, they explored what it might have been like to help in a hospital long ago before Florence Nightingale made significant improvements. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed great curiosity throughout the drama session.
Year 3 have begun this half term using our perseverance tool in Maths, adding across 10 and 100. We are all doing so well! We have also begun our new book in Literacy, ‘The Tin Forest’, using our imagining tool to write expanded noun phrases and adding extra detail using prepositions.
Year 4 have been busy putting their learning tools into action! In history, they used their collaboration and asking questions tools to become detectives, uncovering the dates of historical paintings, photographs, and sculptures. In literacy, they applied their empathy tool to explore the range of emotions experienced by those arriving on the Empire Windrush.
Year 5: this week, we’ve been using our planning tool to gather and organise ideas for writing a speech from the perspective of Nelson Mandela. In history, we’ve been using our making links tool to compare the Ancient Greek Olympics with the modern Olympics, considering the similarities and differences between the two events.
Year 6 have had a fantastic start to the new half term! We have jumped straight back into maths, using our making links tool when refreshing our fractions knowledge finding equivalent fractions and simplifying them. In literacy, we have continued reading ‘Windrush Child’ and have been using our imagining tool to write a review in role, about our new house in the UK after travelling from Jamaica on the Arosa Star (a sister ship to the Empire Windrush). We have also begun our new History topic – ‘The Mayans’ and are looking forward to discovering more about this amazing ancient civilisation.
Science Ambassadors
Say hello to our amazing Science Ambassadors! Selected from Y4, Y5 & Y6 for their passion and commitment to developing an active science community at Dulwich Wood, our Ambassadors are raring to go! They have already launched the first STEAM Question of the year and set up a salt crystals experiment for everyone to see outside the office. They have lots of plans for the year ahead and can’t wait to inspire everyone to do more science!
