Learning Journey – Back to the Future
With less than two weeks to go on our fantastic history themed learning journey ‘Back to the Future’ lots of year groups have been heading up to London to visit museums. We couldn’t give our children these wonderful learning opportunities if we didn’t have so many Parents who are prepared to give up a day and accompany us. Thank you to all the Parents who have helped, or are about to help, on trips this term.
Reminder: pets are not allowed onto the school premises under any circumstances, please work with us on this rule. There are children with serious pet allergies, phobias etc. Legally we have to risk assess any situation involving animals so smuggling them in creates a problem for everyone.
A Snapshot of our Week…
Reception: We have started reading ‘The Extraordinary Gardener’ by Sam Boughton. We have used our Imagining tool to create the most extraordinary plants and creatures, in order to help Joe (the main character of the story) create a world less dull and ordinary. We have also enjoyed taking part in gardening activities and writing instructions to plant a seed.
Year 1: We have been using our Collaboration tool in science to investigate the properties of materials. We first explored the meaning of the words transparent, translucent and opaque and made our predictions. We used a torch and a range of objects to test our predictions and then discussed the results, fascinating!!
Year 2: We have been using our Making Links and Reasoning tools to explore sources from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. We are loving learning about how life has changed since then!

Year 3: We have used our Imagining tool to create our own version of Stone Girl Bone Girl. We also went to the Natural History Museum, our focus was rocks and fossils but we were also able to make so many links with our other learning!
Year 4: We have been using our Reasoning tool brilliantly in maths this week to get to grips with fractions. In science, we have also been using our Reasoning and Collaboration tools when working in pairs to build electric circuits – if you have a bulb, battery and some tin foil at home they can show you how to light up a bulb!
Year 5: We have been reading ‘The Tempest’ by William Shakespeare. We used our Imagining tools to write our own scenes using characters from the play. Drawing upon our drama skills from last term, we also rehearsed and performed our favourite moments from the script! We’ve also been pond dipping in the school pond, it was teeming with wild life!!
Year 6: We have been deepening our knowledge of the Ancient Maya civilisation by using our Asking Questions tool to discover more about their complex number system – which was very advanced for the time. We then used our Making Links tool to create calculations using their number system.

Gardening Club: At last the sun has come out and our garden is growing, Venture, Mr Austin and gardening club have been busy planting and enjoying the beautiful Spring flowers!
Share and Care

Alma: As it is British Science Week, Elizabeth (6A) created this illustration using a quote from celebrated neuroscientist Abhijit Naskar. Thanks for sharing these wise words about humanity and science!
British Science Week
We started our week with a fantastic Science Assembly, Miss Summers shared all the wonderful entries she had received based on the Big Question ‘Can scientists create a real Jurassic Park’. The answer is ‘NO’ and the best 10 entries won dinosaur eggs! Each year group has their own STEAM question linked to our Learning Journey ‘Back to the Future’ to investigate over the next few weeks, have a look on Tapestry, entries can be submitted after the Easter holiday. Dulwich Wood Loves Science! a huge thank you to Miss Summers who always goes the extra mile to ensure science lessons and STEAM questions are super informative and great fun.
Instagram: Our school Instagram is becoming very popular, thanks to Miss Wells who really has the knack of capturing the ‘Wow’ moments around the school! Please do email the school office office@dulwichwood.com if you do not want your child to appear on the Instagram, of course we are already aware of the families who have withdrawn all photo permission.
