Learning Journey – World of Culture
A Snapshot of our Week…

Reception: the children are settling in really well in Reception. We have started teaching phonics and maths and we have also been reading stories about starting big school, discussing all the feelings children might be having about this very special time in their lives.

Year 1: this week we found a mysterious object in the playground! We used our asking questions tool to find out more information about what it might be. The children were fantastic at making links between the clues they saw and what they knew already. After checking the school’s CCTV we found out that a friendly alien had crashed into our playground.

Year 2: have started our wonderful new book ‘Ocean meets Sky’ and written a diary entry as one of the characters. We have also been celebrating our cultural diversity in geography where we have been learning about which continent each of our class members identifies as being part of their heritage.

Year 3: have continued learning about rainforests, exploring the difference between weather and climate and presenting our own weather forecasts for different tropical areas. We are also learning about plants in science, we dissected flowers so we could have a better look at all the parts. We then used our reasoning tool to work out the function of each part.

Year 4: are really enjoying our new guided reading book, “Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure” and have been using our imagining tool to make excellent predictions and inferences about what will happen next. In science we have been using our asking question tool to discover all about sound and how sound is made.  We even made our own telephones to test our ideas.

Year 5: have been using their imagining and empathy tools in Literacy. We used speech marks to add dialogue to an imagined ending to the book ‘The Island’ by Armin Greder.

Year 6: have been digging deeper into the history of Ancient Benin. Using our asking questions tool, we have been exploring how we know about the Ancient Kingdom, especially seeing as they didn’t have a traditional writing system. We compared the integrity of orally told stories against archaeological finds and reported our findings.

Coming Up…

Harvest Festival at St Stephens Church (Y1 – Y6)

Friday 29th September @ 9am

All Welcome!

Please send your child to school with a harvest gift (a tin of food!), your child will then take it to the Church and place it on the altar. All Harvest gifts will be donated to the Refugee Centre on Copplestone Road. There will also be a collection for our school charity ‘Choose Love’ and a prayer for the victims of the disasters in Morocco and Iran. Thank you to Aatma (Y2) for sharing his idea with the School Council via their suggestion box.

House Conker Competition

School Council have been encouraging children to get creative with conkers; please help your child to find a nice conker to either decorate or put a string through to play conkers. If you have never played conkers check out YouTube or ask your child how to play.

The House Competition will take place in the first week of October so get practicing! Hawkes won the cup last year!
