Science at Dulwich Wood
British Science Week 2026
Dulwich Wood has been abuzz with all things science this half term! This year’s British Science Week theme was ‘Curiosity – What’s Your Question?’ and Key Stage 1 and 2 classes were each treated to a special visitor. The children made brilliant use of their asking questions tool to find out how their visitor uses science in their job. We had an amazing variety of volunteer parents – from engineers and physiotherapists to digital designers and statisticians – who gave up their time to inspire our children about where science can take you. It was amazing to hear the children’s thoughtful and inquisitive questions and it was a really inspiring experience for them all.
To wrap up the science-filled term, we also had a wonderful sharing assembly in which each class told the rest of the school all about their scientist. The enthusiasm and excitement about science was clear to see and we definitely have some future Dulwich Wood scientists to look out for!

Learning Journey: Digital Explorers
Our learning at Dulwich Wood:
Reception
This has been a short but wonderful half term of learning in Reception! We have embraced spring through lots of exploration and discussion, deepening our understanding of the seasonal changes around us. In literacy, we loved using our imagining tool and empathy goggles as we read about superheroes, both imaginary and real. In phonics, we continued to use our perseverance to consolidate Phase 3, read longer words, and explore suffixes such as –s and –ing. In maths, we have been using our reasoning and making links tools to learn about the composition of 8, 9 and 10, as well as double facts and 3D shapes. We are ready for the holidays, happy in the knowledge that we have been working hard and that our skills and knowledge are now in full bloom!
Year 1
What a wonderful half term we’ve had! We’ve loved learning all about Shakespeare, acting out different parts of The Tempest, using our empathy googles and creating our own scenes during literacy. We’ve enjoyed exploring measuring length and heights during maths, using rulers to compare the heights of different objects. The best part of our term was when we visited Kensington Palace to use our asking questions tool to find out all about Victorian toys. Well done Y1, have a great Easter break!
Year 2
Y2 have had a fantastic last week. They have been using their empathy goggles and we are so impressed to see how kind and supportive they are being to each other. They have used their perseverance tool in our multiplication and division maths topic. They have loved learning about Mae Jemison and Maggie Alderin-Pocock: two inspiring women in science! Well done Y2!
Year 3
Year 3 have spent this whole half term focusing on Volcanoes and Pompeii. This has ended with incredible newspaper reports that we wrote for ‘The Roman Record’. The children all used their planning and imagining tools to create some really great reports which they then ‘published’ in true newspaper style. We have also had the chance to be on another trip – this time to Dulwich Prep where we were taught a science lesson by their Y8 students. We got to test acids and alkalis, play with magnets and melt Nutella over a bunsen burner but our favourite experiment included setting fire to Doritos, Monster Munch and Wotsits – even if it did make the room stink! We are all now very excited to see what the summer term has in store for us!!
Year 4
Y4 had an exciting and fascinating trip to the Science Museum, exploring electricity and all the delights in the amazing Wonderlab! The children have also been using their imagining and reasoning tools to use relative clauses, conjunctions and time adverbials to write about how electric pencil sharpeners ‘work’.
Year 5
This half term, Y5 have blasted off on our “Digital Explorers” journey! From the race to space to exploring our solar system and learning about influential figures, we’ve used our making links skills across Science, Literacy, and Guided Reading. We also had an exciting trip to the Science Museum, bringing our space learning to life! Plus, we finished our Samba unit with a fantastic performance—thank you to Nuno, the team, and all the parents who came to watch! As always, our Dulwich Wood Learning Toolkit has been at the heart of everything we do, helping us explore, create, and achieve!
Year 6
What a half term it has been for Y6! We have used our imagining tool to write beautiful narratives, setting descriptions and character descriptions; our perseverance tool to complete challenging learning in maths and our asking questions tool to carry out terrifically gross science experiments. We have also begun looking at our End of Year Play…watch this space!
