Our week at Dulwich Wood:
Learning Journey: Digital Explorers
Reception
To wrap up our work on ‘Super Milly and the Super School Day’, we were inspired by how Milly helps a friend save the day with a brilliant Show and Tell about minibeasts. The children were super-enthusiastic about discovering facts about their favourite minibeasts and creating drawings or models to present to the class. Using our empathy goggles, we recognised everyone’s super efforts. This then led us to look more closely at the world around us — spotting not just more minibeasts, but also the signs of spring, especially as it is British Science Week.
Year 1
Science Week was lots of fun! We used our ‘Curiosity’ to ask questions to find out about our special visitor whose job involved science in some ways. It was amazing how the children used their reasoning and making links tools to think about interesting questions to ask. Our visitors were very impressed with Y1 using their empathy goggles: being polite and kind when waiting for their turn to ask their question. We also started our new history topic about toys; we compared the toys that we play with to some that our grandparents had in the past! We loved making links and pointing out the similarities and differences.
Year 2
Y2 enjoyed their trip to the Science Museum on Tuesday where they managed their distractions fantastically on the journey and at the museum. They made links and asked questions exploring materials, space and the making of the modern world. We are very impressed with your scientific thinking!
Year 3
Y3 have been using their asking questions tool this week to find out what it is like to be a scientist. We were lucky enough to have two incredibly interesting scientists come to visit us and tell us all about how they use science in their work. We also used our making links tool to discover the connections between science and the wonderful world of farming. We are all now feeling inspired to follow in their footsteps and become either future farmers or scientists ourselves!
Year 4
We had two fabulously interesting visitors in Y4, welcoming Marianne (a patent attorney) to Ash and Andrew (a consultancy director) to Cypress. We used our asking questions tool to explore how they use science in their roles. Thank you very much to both for coming! We also used our planning tool to design our own Scratch games, ready to bring them to life over the next two weeks.
Year 5
Y5 have been celebrating British Science Week by using our asking questions tool to interview parent visitors who work in different scientific fields. We were lucky to welcome a statistician from the Civil Service, a computing teacher, and a respiratory physiotherapist, who shared insights about their careers and how science plays an important role in their work. We prepared thoughtful questions in advance and used our planning tool to carefully record the visitors’ answers.
Year 6
Y6 have been using their imagining and empathy tools in literacy to put themselves into the characters’ shoes and create descriptive phrases to add to dialogue. They then acted out the scenes they had created. We have also had a great British Science Week exploring medical technical innovation and digital design. Can we send a special shout-out to Kruno Lopandic and Tom Petty who led fantastic workshops which the children found absolutely fascinating!
