Learning Journey: Global Identities
Our week at Dulwich Wood:
Reception
We have finished reading ‘The Magic Paintbrush’ and we all particularly enjoyed the part where Shen paints a dragon to scare away the mean Emperor so he would leave her village in peace. Inspired by the story, we used our imagining tool to design and draw our own dragons. We talked about the features that make dragons look fierce and used our phonics knowledge to label these features. We finished our work by giving each dragon a special name using a compound word (two words joined together to make a new word)!
Year 1
This term in Science, Y1 have been learning about and comparing different materials. This week, the children carried out an exciting investigation to discover which materials are absorbent. Using our making links tool, they discussed everyday objects made from different materials and considered how these materials are used. This helped them to make thoughtful predictions about which materials would absorb water. The children then used pipettes to place three drops of water onto a range of materials and carefully observed what happened. Working collaboratively, they shared their findings and drew conclusions from their investigation.
Year 2
Y2 have been using their perseverance and imagining tools this week in Literacy whilst planning their narratives. They have been innovating their stories inspired by our text ‘Ocean Meets Sky’ and coming up with some very exciting invented vehicles for their adventures. They have also been working hard in maths making links to prior learning in preparation for Number Day on Friday!
Year 3
In Y3 we have been using our planning and empathy tools this week, writing speeches as Brutus to persuade the Roman citizens that killing Caesar was the right course of action. We have really enjoyed getting into character! We have also continued to enjoy our focus on poetry in guided reading, using our collaboration tool to identify examples of personification in a poem all about the wind.
Year 4
We used our asking questions tool to speculate about the mysterious metal arm that appeared in the pagoda. We used our reasoning tool to make predictions, before discovering that it must have been part of Ted Hughes’ ‘The Iron Man’, from our classic new Literacy book.
Year 5
This week, Y5 have been busy bringing their creativity to life! They used their imagining and planning tools to write their own versions of The Tempest. In Maths, we wrapped up our fractions unit and used our managing distraction tool to stay focused during our end-of-unit assessments. In Science, the children put on their empathy goggles to explore how CO₂ affects our planet and discussed what actions we can take to help protect it.
Year 6
Y6 have had another great week! We have been using our imagining and planning tools to create fabulous gothic narratives bringing together all of the skills we have been using this term. We are very proud of their efforts and they are feeling pretty proud of themselves.
Our Friday Fruit!
Elderflower Greengrocer in West Dulwich have kindly donated some fruit for the children! Thanks to Sophia’s Mum for arranging this, the children loved it!

NSPCC Number Day 2026
Thank you to everyone for supporting Number Day and helping to raise money for the NSPCC! Thanks also to Ms Pollock, our maths lead, for inspiring us all with maths ideas for the day!
