Learning Journey: Global Identities
Our week at Dulwich Wood:
Reception
This week, we have been exploring a range of classic fairy tales and using them to learn about the key elements of a story: characters, setting, problem and solution. We then placed these onto a simple story map with a beginning, middle and end. We have been using our making links tool to identify these elements across different stories, and many children had a fantastic go at creating their own story maps, either retelling familiar tales or inventing stories of their own!
Year 1
What a fantastic first week back we have had in Y1! We have begun our new Learning Journey, ‘Global Identities’, where we have been exploring the continents of the world and learning how to use globes and maps. A mysterious bag filled with space-themed objects appeared in our classroom, sparking lots of curiosity. We asked thoughtful questions and made predictions about the character Astrid from our new book, Astro Girl. The children have loved using their imagining tool and writing in role as Astrid, to imagine what it would be like to be an astronaut and using exciting adjectives to describe being in space.
Year 2
Y2 have settled in to the new term and new year using their empathy and managing distractions tool. We have been so impressed with their mature attitude! They have been making links to past learning in science and have planted beans to observe how seeds grow. What a great first week for Y2!
Year 3
Y3 have begun the new half term by going all Shakespearean! We have been using our imagining tools to become members of Ancient Roman society – from soldiers to Emperors – as we begin our learning about Julius Caesar. We have continued to develop our multiplication skills in maths, with a particular focus on reasoning. It has been a great start to the term!
Year 4
Y4 have been thoroughly enjoying their work on Macbeth, embracing the drama and relishing the chance to play some truly terrifying witches! In maths, they have shown just how much they remember from last term, confidently applying all the key skills they learned — amazing work, Year 4!
Year 5
Y5 have launched into the Spring term with great enthusiasm in Literacy, beginning two exciting new texts including an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The children embarked on a dramatic imaginary voyage, using our imagining tool to bring a powerful storm to life through creative writing. They wowed us with their ambitious vocabulary and rich noun phrases, capturing emotion and atmosphere beautifully.
Year 6
Our Y6 children have come back to school bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready for the term ahead. We have started a range of new topics and books, such as The Wind in the Wall, which is a Gothic ghost story and our new literacy text. We have explored descriptive language, creating detailed noun phrases and imaginative figurative language. We are also reading Philip Pullman’s Grimm Fairytales, which the children are really enjoying. As part of our learning journey, Global Identities, we have begun to learn about Global Diversity and Climate Change in geography, identifying different biomes around the world.
