Autumn Term Learning Journey – Voices from the Past
Reception: As we’ve continued exploring the text ‘Look Up!’ the children have really enjoyed learning lots of facts about shooting stars and meteor showers. Together, we noticed how the characters in the story begin to change, as they finally put down their phones to look up and see the people and the wonderful world around them. We finished the week by using our imagining tool, just like Rocket, to dream big about what we might like to be when we grow up!
Year 1: In our science lessons this week, we have been learning all about the five different animal groups: mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and birds. The children did a fantastic job of using their asking questions and making links tools to identify and sort different animals into the correct groups. They also used their reasoning tool to explain their thinking clearly and confidently.
Year 2 have been deepening their knowledge about Florence Nightingale by planning and preparing their diary entry. We have been looking at what ambitious words we can use. We even interviewed each other to imagine how to prepare to go and be a nurse in the Crimean War!
Year 3 have used their planning, reasoning and collaboration tools to plan and carry out an experiment to see what surface a toy car travels the furthest on. We also had a great time returning to Kingswood Library and picking out some new books to add to our reading corner!
Year 4 We have finished reading ‘Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush‘ and learned about the bravery and pioneering spirit of the Windrush Generation, making links with our history topic. We used our empathy, planning and perseverance tools to use the literacy skills we practised to write and deliver speeches in role.
Year 5: We have been using our perseverance tool to practise touch typing in computing. We also collaborated to try and give each other useful tips and check our partner was using the correct fingers on the keyboard. In history, we used our reasoning tool to think about whether we would have rather lived in ancient Athens or Sparta. Some of us sensibly decided we would rather live in neither!
Year 6 has had a jam-packed week, full of SATs practice and other learning. They used their managing distractions, making links and perseverance tools this week to tackle a round of SATs papers from previous years – the entire Y6 team are incredibly proud of each and everyone of the children for giving it their all. In history, we discovered more about the Maya Civilisation – using atlases to locate the various countries they lived in, then comparing them to their modern-day counterpart.
