Summer Term Learning Journey – The Future is Ours
Reception As our year in Reception draws to a close, we’ve been feeling excited about the adventures that await us in Year 1! This week, we’ve taken some time to reflect on all the wonderful things we’ve learnt over the past year. We revisited our key texts and proudly looked through our special writing folders to see just how far we’ve come since September. In maths, we talked about the things we can now do with confidence that once felt tricky, and we also celebrated other milestones, like learning to ride a bike, swim, or conquer the monkey bars! We’ve also been thinking about how our Whole Dulwich Wood Toolkit has helped us grow into independent, resilient learners who are ready for the next step.
Year 1 have loved exploring our new book ‘Change Sings’. The children have used their imagining tool to create poems using a range of verbs with the ‘ing’ suffix. We have also loved learning about the author of ‘Change Sings’, Amanda Gorman. Did you know she was America’s first National Youth Poet Laureate! The children have also used their planning and making links tools to write fantastic character descriptions of her, encouraging people to come and see her poetry performances. Great work!
Year 2 have been impressing everyone with their use of the making links tool in maths! We have been learning how to tell the time in 5-minute intervals on an analogue clock which has been really challenging but we have loved every minute (literally!) We have noticed that the clock is really just the 5 times table and we are experts in that already. We have also been making links with the timing of our daily routines to help us practise…keep quizzing us at home too!
Year 3 have had a great week. We have enjoyed using our collaboration tool in PE lessons with Miss Sinead and had a brilliant trip to Dulwich College to hear from the author Ben Lyttleton all about his new book ‘Score like a Striker’. We have also been getting stuck into our new statistics topic in maths, using our reasoning tool to interpret different types of charts and graphs.
Year 4 have had a fabulous week using our Whole Dulwich Wood Toolkit, especially on our trip to the Thames Barrier on the hottest day of the year so far! We learnt a lot about how the barrier works and why it is needed. We have also used our imagining tool to write beautiful poems in literacy, and our planning tool to test sound proofing materials in science.
Year 5 went on a trip to the Tate Modern to see some abstract and modern art. We used our imagining tool to wonder what the painting might be communicating and our asking questions tool to find out how it made our classmates feel. We have also been using our empathy tool to be kind and considerate to each other in the hot weather.
Year 6 have had a fantastic week! We have been using our collaboration and imagining tools to make props and decorations for our end of year play – often thinking outside of the box! In Literacy, we have begun to create PowerPointp Presentations about specific endangered animals from our text ‘Can We Save the Tiger?’, whilst also preparing to begin our whole school text ‘Change Sings’. On Thursday, we took a trip to the Polka Theatre to see ‘The Boy with Wings’, an adaptation of Lenny Henry’s book – it was amazing! We loved seeing a text we have read come to life on stage and it gave us inspiration for our upcoming play.
