Spring Term Learning Journey – Our World Through Time
Reception: We’ve been reading the story ‘Weirdo’ and discussing the things that make us all special and different, and how important it is for all of us to feel loved and accepted for who we are. The children have blown us away with how they have used their empathy goggles to write messages of kindness and acceptance to their friends, as well as thinking about how the main character Maud learns that she is not a ‘weirdo’, she’s just herself and she doesn’t need to change who she is to be accepted and valued.
Year 1 have been learning all about position and direction in maths, giving instructions to their classmates to help them move around the class. We used words like forwards, backwards, left and right. This has helped us make links with our computing lessons about how to control and move a robot around a mat by inputting commands. We’re becoming experts at it!

Year 2 have used their Whole Dulwich Wood Toolkit on our trip to the Monument. We made links with our learning about The Great Fire of London and asked some fantastic questions about why it was built. We used our collaboration and empathy tools to travel safely on the underground and really made Dulwich Wood proud!
Year 3 have been using their reasoning and making links tools in science to discover many types of fossils. We spent a long time discussing what we thought each fossil was and how old it could be. We have also been persevering in Maths whilst looking at an analogue clock and answering really tricky questions related to time.

Year 4 have been thoroughly enjoying the literacy text, Varmints. We have been using our collaboration and imagining tools to identify and create noun phrases and prepositional phrases inspired by the text. We are also using our perseverance tool to prepare for our Multiplication Tables Check after half term.
This all came after our wonderful trip to the British Museum on Monday, where we enthusiastically explored the Ancient Egyptian collection to round off our History topic.
Year 5 have been using their reasoning and collaboration tools in guided reading to consider whether the ‘Space Race’ was a good thing for humanity. We retrieved evidence from the text to gather pros and cons. In science, we used our making links and reasoning tools to explain why we experience day and night!
Year 6 have had a great week! We have been using our collaboration tool as we have been going through our auditions for our upcoming End of Year show! Working in teams, we have been rehearsing different scenes from the script – some of us have already learnt all our lines! In literacy, we have been using our imagining tools to create detailed descriptions of the barren landscape from our text ‘Paradise Sands’.
Sailing Trip

On Wednesday Miss Curwen, Ms Prospere and six children went sailing at Surrey Quays. We had a great time sailing up and down the dock, with one person steering and the other managing the sail. Some of us were a bit nervous but still did it and we were very proud of ourselves! The children were a credit to Dulwich Wood and are already looking forward to going again next year!
