‘Together We Can’
Often children know best and last week Antonella in Y6 shared her beautifully illustrated slogan ‘Together We Can’. Many of us have adopted this slogan and are working hard to ensure that the last four weeks of the term are as good as the first four. We need you to continue to work with us all the way to the end of term.
This means:
- Not driving in front of the school on Bowen Drive at pick-up and drop-off. We know residents are permitted to do this but please drive around the back of the school. On Thursday this week a child fell off her bike and a parent had to run into the road to stop a car, a few minutes later another car mounted the curb to pass an oncoming van. We want to encourage families to bike, scoot and walk to school but need your support to do this.
- Getting your children to school on time, everyone knows that the gates close at 8:50am but many families are arriving after this time. Children are therefore missing the crucial early morning work, arriving late for Assembly etc… Please note, not only is your child missing learning time by being late you are also creating additional work for the Office Staff.
- Supporting the Dulwich Wood Festival on Fri 12th Jul, 3 – 5.30pm! Only 5 bikes have been donated, only 1 Car Boot Pitch has been booked (reduced to £10 per car/table), hardly any books or toys have been donated!!  We want to make this event a success and ‘Together We Can!’
A snapshot of our Week:
Reception: We completed our work around The Great Fire of Tooley Street with our trip to Tooley Street and the River Thames on Monday. Thank you so much to our wonderful parent volunteers for all your help in ensuring the children had a great time! We then rounded up our learning by making links to how fires are handled in our time. Mr Chris took the children on a little tour around our school and explained some of the fire safety measures we have in place to keep us safe in the event of a fire.
Year 1: We started the week with a special visitor who showed us lots of different toys from when she was a child. The children absolutely loved to hear about the games she used to play in her childhood and enjoyed having a go at trying her toys out too. A big thank you to Carol (Ambrose’s grandma) for her enthusiasm and time. You really helped bring the topic alive!
Year 2 have been using their reasoning tool in history. We have been exploring how items from the past can help us learn about what life was like and that we call these things ‘sources.’ We discussed which items would be most useful to help us understand the past and started to think a little bit about bias.
Year 3 have had an excellent week reading Julius Caesar and using our empathy and imagining tools to act out the inner conflict suffered by Brutus, and then use our planning tool to draft and write a diary entry full of conjunctions and persuasive language. It’s a complex story and the children are doing really well!
Year 4 continued their learning about the digestive system this week by going “scat” hunting around our fantastic outdoor space. We looked for evidence of any detritivores that live in our grounds by searching for their scat (which is a scientific word for animal poo!) We found lots of bird scat, bee scat and snail scat! We used evidence around the scat to try and conclude which animal left it, their diet and their activities.
Year 5 have been using their making links tool. They have been learning about statistics in maths and this week applied it to their learning in science. After looking at how humans grow and change over time, they presented the information in line graphs. Using special paper, everyone did really well to draw their own detailed graphs.
Year 6 have been exploring the Suffragette Movement. We used our collaboration tool and empathy goggles, when working together to come up with a set of rules that were fair to all, ensuring no one was treated unfairly. We have also started our transition activities, in preparation for secondary school.
Wombat Stew- Strings Collaboration with Dulwich College
A huge well done to all the cello and violin players (pupils and staff!) who took part in the Wombat Stew performance at Dulwich College on Wednesday.
Thank you to all the proud Parents who came along and were blown away by the professionalism and the musical ability of their children!
Lesley, strings lead teacher at Dulwich College, wrote the music to accompany Wombat Stew and has worked tirelessly to secure the funding for this collaboration, now in its fourth year, to continue next year. 22 Dulwich Wood pupils are receiving weekly group violin or cello lessons courtesy of Dulwich College. There are likely to be 10 spaces available in September for Y5 pupils (currently Y4) please email hjary@dulwichwood.com if you would like your child to be considered. Do ask your child first as lessons take place during a lunchtime and the commitment is for a year!
Windrush
We enjoyed some fantastic drama in Assembly on Monday from some children in Year 4B, they put on their empathy goggles and used their imagining tool and shared their understanding of what it must have been like for the Windrush Generation, past and present!
Chartwells helped us celebrate the wonderful cultural diversity that London enjoys as a direct result of migration in the 60’s with a fabulous Windrush lunch which included jerk chicken, macaroni cheese and pineapple upside down cake!

Kingsdale Music Festival
Miss Well’s wonderful LKS2 choir took part in the annual Kingsdale Music Festival last night. They performed (wearing hats of course!) ‘A hat full of dreams’ from the new Willy Wonker movie and sang out loud and proud, in collaboration with the other performers, ‘I got the music in me!’.
Thank you to all the Parents who came along and enjoyed the festival and a special thanks to Miss Wells who has worked tirelessly with her choir to ensure everyone, not only has fun singing but performs to the highest standard!
Miss Wells brings the same enthusiasm and joy to singing assembly every Wednesday, a high light of the week for both staff and pupils!
