Learning Journey – Represent Us
A Snapshot of our Week…
Reception: Following on from our learning around a healthy diet that includes a variety of food, this week we’ve been talking about other things we can do to keep our bodies in good health. We devised some science experiments, one to demonstrate the importance of washing our hands properly and another one to investigate what different drinks (milk, water, cola and orange juice) do to our teeth! We have been fantastic at making links to create some great posters promoting good habits for us to grow strong and healthy!
Year 1 have been using our imaging tool to write our own version of ‘Stanley’s Stick’. We used our plans from last week to support and extend our writing, some of us even had a go at publishing them. We were very proud to share our stories with each other. In Science, we are starting to grow peas in a bag and we are looking forward to observing the changes over the next few weeks.

This week, Year 2 have been using their making links and asking questions tool in Science. We went on a hunt for minibeasts in microhabitats in our school gardens and pond!

Year 3 were lucky enough to take part in the Southwark Ukulele Festival. The children used their perseverance tool during the rehearsal time and managed their distractions perfectly on the stage during the show. They are a real asset to Dulwich Wood!
Year 4 have started their new book in literacy and used their imagining tool brilliantly to describe the opening scene with excellent use of noun phrases. We have also continued our exploration of electricity in science and used our collaboration tool whilst working in small groups to create a circuit using multiple cells.
Year 5 have been using their reasoning, asking questions and making links tools to explore ideas and evidence that prove the Earth is spherical. We looked at some really impressive videos of the Earth from space!
Year 6 have been working really hard in preparation for our SATs tests. Using our perseverance tool and collaboration tool, we have been tackling tasks together and discussing different strategies we use to answer questions.

Dulwich College Junior School Symposium
Connections and Communications
Last Friday Y4 enjoyed a day of fascinating exploration, this year’s theme ‘Connections and Communications’ was explored in detail and challenged all the young learners (and adults) in new and exciting ways. Dulwich Wood pupils showed outstanding collaboration and behaviour throughout the day, working with boys from Dulwich College and girls from Jags, making the most of this opportunity to go beyond the curriculum. Thank you to Dulwich College for the invite!

Gymnastics Competition
The first-place trophy went to a team of six amazing gymnasts who represented Dulwich Wood at the Southwark Gymnastics competition. Miss Sinead commented that every child had practiced and perfected their routine in their own time and she couldn’t have been prouder. A huge well done to Fabian, Woody, Kuzey, Scarlett, Izzy and Eira.

Our very modest and successful climber, Joey in Y6, has gone on to achieve even more this term. He came 1st in a competition in Ireland and 4th in Scotland; his scores meant he also came 1st in the overall series making him the first Primary aged child to have ever won a series. He climbs for the Under 14’s team and this incredible result is likely to secure his spot, for a second year, on the GB Youth Team. Well done Joey!
Coming Up
Lost Property
We will be putting out lost property at the end of each day by the main gates. We have more than 30 jumpers and fleeces with no names in. Please collect one if your child has lost one, we haven’t got the storage space so at the end of each half term any items not collected will go to the recycling centre.
Author Visit: Year 2 Author Visit at Dulwich Prep on Tue 14th May
Year 2 will be meeting the author Andy Day and finding out all about his new book Dino Dad. If you want to purchase a signed copy of the book at the reduced price of £7 please order and pay via SchoolsBuddy before the 10th May.
Splash!
Year 6 have been selected to take part in the annual Southwark Splash, the biggest Southwark Music Services event of the year, where nearly 600 children sing and dance their way through original songs based on a specific theme. The 2022 festival was based on the life and legacy of Desmond Tutu- you can see the performances here. This year’s project will be led by virtuoso jazz pianist and composer Pete Letanka and will take part on the Southbank, more details to follow.

Maypole dancing with Donna Marie – Saturday 18th May 12pm and 2pm
The children remembered with fondness when they danced around the maypole with Donna Marie. Although she isn’t coming to school this year she will be at the Love West Dulwich Spring Festival and would love the Dulwich Wood children to meet her there!
