Learning Journey – Back to the Future
A Snapshot of our Week…
Reception: Our role play area has turned into a Superheroes HQ as we have started reading ‘Super Milly and the Super School Day’ by Stephanie Clarkson. The children have been amazing at using their imagining tool, dressing up as superheroes and thinking about their own superpowers, both imaginary and real ones (e.g. being a good friend, being kind, funny etc.) just like Milly in the story.
Year 1: We came across an unexpected bed in the classroom; since then we have been using our asking questions tool to help us unravel this mystery. Is it really a magic bed? Where will it take us? We even made a link with our history topic ‘schools from the past’ and we believe this bed travelled in time.
Year 2: This week we were amazed to find a box of lost toys in the classroom surrounded by a mysterious dust! We used our imagining and asking questions tool to discuss where the toys might have come from and what we should do with them.
Year 3: We started learning about Mary Anning, the subject of our literacy book: Stone Girl, Bone Girl! As an introduction to the topic of rocks and fossils, and linked to Mary Anning, Year 3 were paleontologists this week, digging in sand to find interesting rocks and fossils, and then cleaning and describing them.
Year 4: This week we have started our new reading book, Tutankhamun, which is linked to our History topic, Ancient Egypt. The children are completely enthralled! They are using their imagining tools to discover what life was like so long ago and have been thrilled to find out some of the more bizarre facts! They are becoming Egyptian experts – ask them what they have unearthed this week!
Year 5: We used our whole learning toolkits this week to start getting to grips with the legacy of the Ancient Greeks – focusing on democratic debate – as well as start cracking ‘Shakespeare’s code’ through our early readings of The Tempest.
Year 6: We have been using our imagining tool this week to plan and write our own Gothic story. We have had great fun creating lots of dark and spooky imagery. In history we have used our asking questions tool to begin finding out about the Ancient Maya civilisation.
Smart Watches
Mobile phone and smart watch technology has advanced significantly over the last few years and continues to evolve. Many smart watches now offer internet access and games alongside standard functions of messaging, camera, video and sound recording. Although there are many benefits to them, smartwatches are not permitted to be worn to school as staff are unable to monitor them closely enough to ensure they are being used appropriately. However, in line with our passion for helping children to tell the time, a standard analogue or digital wrist watch may be worn. If you are unsure whether your child’s watch is appropriate, please speak to the office or a member of the SLT on the gate.

Dulwich Wood School Street
As you are aware the School Street on the Kingswood Estate is at last up and running. Cameras are in operation and warning notices are being issued, these will soon be replaced by fines.
Tobias Allen, a Transport Projects Engineer from Southwark emailed this week saying:
‘Southwark School Streets Programme aims to create a pleasant environment that feels safer in the immediate vicinity of a school, discourage travelling to school by car in cases where alternative means of travel are available, and encourage walking, scooting and cycling to school, thereby achieving positive health outcomes for the school community.’
Thank you to the Dulwich Wood Parents who have responded so positively to this initiative and are now walking or cycling to school with their children. We will be offering free learn to ride your bike sessions and Level 1 Cycle Confident sessions later this half term for Year 3 children.
