Learning Journey – Sustain to Remain
A Snapshot of our Week…
Reception: We’ve been learning all about the Chinese New Year celebrations beginning on Saturday. The children have loved looking into all the traditions for this event, e.g. making paper lanterns, red lucky envelopes and even learning the lion dance! They have used their perseverance tool to write messages for the new Year of the Dragon. Kung Hei Fat Choi!
Year 1: We used our planning tool to write an informative pamphlet on ‘How to look after our world’. The children were really good at applying their learning to our discussions about the environmental issues we face today. We also had our third RE day all about Hinduism and sat listening to the ‘Aum’ sound, what Hindus believe to be the first sound of the universe.
Year 2: We have had a lovely week finishing our ‘Sustain to remain’ topic. We have used our planning and empathy tools to write an amazing newspaper report about plastic in the ocean.

Year 3: We have used our planning and imagining tools to write a fabulous newspaper report about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that destroyed the ancient city of Pompeii. We have also finished painting our model volcanoes and even made them erupt using baking soda and vinegar! It was fantastic way to end an exciting half term!
Year 4: We had a fantastic time in the woods searching for signs of spring. We identified numerous plants and trees as well as spotted insects, annelids and even, a rather large arachnid! Despite it still being early February, we discovered plenty of life in the woods as well as enjoyed getting some fresh air which fitted perfectly with mental health week!
Year 5: We used our collaboration tool on a trip to Stave Hill Ecological Park. We worked together to create posters promoting protection of the local environment, planted trees and role-played the life cycles of different creatures.
Year 6: We’ve been using our making links tool this week in maths, as we’ve delved into measurement: converting, calculating and comparing metric and imperial units. In literacy we have continued reading our Gothic story and enjoyed using our planning tool to write a formal letter to the Duke of Northumberland.
Dulwich College Juniors – Book Week
This week Y3 & Y4 had a wonderful time with the Y4 boys at Dulwich College when they met the author Charlie Brookes who told us all about Holly Hopkins and stories about his wonderful sniffer dog Sammy.
Today Y5 and Y6 have had the pleasure of meeting Adisa, a performance poet and Rap artist who shared experts from his book Lip Hopping with the Fundi Fu!
A huge thank you to Hazel, the librarian at Dulwich College, for inviting us to their Book week it has been a great prequel to ours! School Council have been coming up with some lovely ideas around how we can celebrate World Book Day at Dulwich Wood!
PE Update

Netball: Dulwich Wood won and will be representing Southwark at the London School Games! A massive thank you to Edina (our fantastic Midday Meals and After School Club Worker) who only had this half term to coach the team and get them to such a high standard. Dulwich Wood ‘A’ Team played Dulwich Wood ‘B’ team in the semi finals and then the ‘A’ Team went on to win the final 7:1! We are so proud of all the children who took part.
Running Club
Throughout this half term, running club have persevered with training in the woods, on the track at Dulwich College and this week in Crystal Palace Park! Well done to everyone and a special thank you to our Parent helpers Andrew, Shane and Adrian.
We want everyone to get running over the half term because we are about to have a house competition. Miss Shaw is in the processes of organising an Inter House long distance running competition. It will take place at Dulwich College Track between 9 and 10am on Monday 26th February. More details to follow!

“To welcome the new year, we clean and decorate our home with new year decorations, often red in colour symbolising good luck. I made this Lego money tree. We believe that a money tree brings abundance, prosperity and good luck†Teddy 2A
