Learning Journey – Sustain to Remain
Welcome back we really hope you had a restful holiday and are ready and refreshed to support your child’s learning.
A Snapshot of our Week…
Reception: We have been reading a selection of classical fairy tales and learning about some of the elements of a story: characters, setting, problem and solution, and then using these to create simple story maps with a beginning, middle and ending. The children have been fantastic at having an independent go at this, either using known stories or using their imagining tool to create their own!
Year 1: What a great start to the term we have had! On Tuesday we received a package containing a bus and on Wednesday and Thursday we found that something had messed up our classrooms! We used our questioning tool to investigate and then made links between the package and the messes.
Year 2: We had to use our imagining tool when a river appeared in the classroom! We have been learning why we need to protect water and have used our empathy tool to write a persuasive speech and loved sharing them with the class!
Year 3: We’ve had a great first week back! We started our swimming lessons, and all showed fantastic perseverance in the water! We have also started learning about volcanoes, using our asking questions tool to find out more!
Year 4: We witnessed a mysterious woman walking across the playground on Monday! We used our imagining tools to make some very creative predictions as to who she was! Since then, we have discovered that she is a mermaid from our new book, the Mermaid of Zennor! We have now found out a little more about her story and used our empathy goggles to write an emotional diary entry from the viewpoint of one of the characters.
Year 5: We have been using our imagining and asking questions tools to discuss and debate. We have been thinking about sustainability, AI, robots and their place in society. To help us we have even watched interviews with robots that can talk!
Year 6: We’ve had a great start to the Spring term. We have been using our asking questions tool in geography to help us identify the different goods that the UK imports and exports. We have also been using our imagining tool to make predictions for our new book The Promise, which has got us thinking about the power and importance of nature.
Home Learning
Parents and staff at Dulwich Wood have a shared priority to deliver the best possible outcomes for all the children at Dulwich Wood. Together we can ensure that children make good progress in their learning.
How can you support your child with their home learning?
Encourage and support your child/children to complete these home learning activities:
- Home Learning Project – Teachers upload home learning projects on Tapestry each fortnight (Y1, Y2, Y3 & Y4) and monthly (Y5 & Y6).
- Maths – Numbots (Y1) & Times Tables Rockstars (Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5 & Y6).
- Reading – Online Reading Programs – Accelerated Reader (Y3, Y4, Y5 & Y6) & Big Cat Books (Rec, Y1 & Y2).
- Reading – School Library Books – books are changed regularly.
- Spelling (Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5 & Y6) shared weekly on Tapestry.
- STEAM Question – shared monthly on Tapestry – answer in the most creative way possible.
- SATs Companion – Y5 & Y6 – can be completed daily.
- Please email the office if you can’t remember your log-in for Tapestry or your child’s log-in details for any of the online programmes.
Other ways to support your child’s learning:
- Talk about the Dulwich Wood Learning Toolkit and how the tools help us all to be better learners!
- Read the Weekly Newsletter to ensure you know what is happening at Dulwich Wood.
Fruity Friday: your children will no doubt tell you that Fruity Friday didn’t happen today! Unfortunately, we are unable to continue with this wonderful Dulwich Wood institution without some new volunteers. The two key Y6 parents who shop and run Fruity Friday are no longer able to and, after 7 years, we completely do understand why!
The Children love their Fruity Friday treats but unless we get regular volunteers who are committed to leading on the shopping and the preparation, Fruity Friday will be a thing of the past! If you are able to take on one of these roles, please contact Mrs Jary.
