Learning Journey – Legacy Builders

This week, each year group from Y1-Y6 had the amazing opportunity to participate in a Black history workshop called ‘Her Story’ by the Bigfoot Theatre company. The workshop explored the struggles and achievements of historic and contemporary black women from the past 250 years. They were introduced to Harriet Tubman, Nicola Adams, Rosa Parks and many more women whose actions have shaped our history.
A Snapshot of our Week…
Reception: We have made a pause in our work around ‘Look Up!’ to learn about the festival of Diwali. We have read the story of Rama and Sita as well as other stories, and looking into some of the traditional ways in which the Hindu people mark this celebration (e.g. decorations, clothes and dancing).
Year 1: We have been using our empathy tool to write a set of instructions on how to help lost animals, using both adverbs of time and exciting adjectives. To celebrate Black History Month, we had an interactive workshop exploring black female ‘rebels’ who have helped shaped the world.
Year 2: We have loved using our empathy tool in our work workshop, ‘Her Story’ to help us make links with our learning for Black History Month. We especially enjoyed making tableaus to help us learn about Ruby Bridges!
Year 3: We have been using our asking questions and empathy tools this week to explore the life of Walter Tull, one of the first black footballers in England and the first black officer to lead white soldiers during World War 1. We also had a wonderful workshop learning about significant black women throughout history, which was active and inspiring. Finally, we have started reading the Tin Forest for our literacy stimulus, using prepositional phrases and modal verbs to describe and give advice.
Year 4: We used our whole tool kit whilst on a fascinating trip to the Science Museum. We had time to explore many of the different exhibits in the museum including ‘The Secret Life of Home’ which linked to our current literacy book on how everyday objects work. We then had 2 brilliant workshops on the States of Matter, Sound and Light. The children behaved brilliantly and we were very proud of them all.
Year 5: We used our asking questions tool during a workshop that explored the achievements of historic black women from the past 250 years. We also used our making links tool to link it with our reading books Black and British and Long Walk to Freedom.
Year 6: We thoroughly enjoyed our Black History Month workshop ‘Her Story’, where we learnt about various famous black females like Rosa Parks and Serena Williams. In literacy, we are continuing our journey to Harlem as Amara, discovering more about our own personal histories. Using our collaboration tool, we worked together to create poems about Roots with figurative language to build a picture in the reader’s mind.
Choir News – Singing Project with the Old Vic Theatre

Miss Wells and Mr Martell (and some Parent helpers, thank you to them!) took the Year 3 /4 choir to their first rehearsal for the community singing project ’12 Choirs of Christmas’ with The Old Vic Theatre. We have been partnered with a local choir for people with a diagnosis of dementia called ‘Musical Memories.’ Everyone involved had a wonderful time getting to know each other and singing together at this first meeting.
We will be performing with the other 11 choirs at the Old Vic on Monday 11th December around 2pm (more details to follow).
