Our Learning Journey – Welcome to Our World

Our learning this week…

Reception – We have some very special visitors; the elves Ted and Ed have come to watch the children and report back to Santa. The problem is they can be a little bit naughty sometimes and they have been getting up to mischief when we’re not looking. The children have been writing some messages to Santa to let him know that Ted and Ed have spilled the paint, made a mess when making playdough and then climbed the Christmas trees. In maths we have been looking at repeating patterns and practised this with paper chains, music and delicious fruit kebabs!

Year 1 – We have continued with our theme of addition and subtraction in maths with children using both the number line and ten frames method. We have done some superb learning all to do with the human body and its senses in Science. In literacy we have been using our snipping tool to identify the different suffixes and root words in our book ‘Dinosaurs and all that rubbish’.

Year 2 – We have been so excited this week, using our imagination tool to try and solve some of the mystery around the story “Between Tick and Tock”. We found out that a girl called Liesel needed our help to solve the problems in her city and in order to do that, she stopped the town clock. We made some predictions about what her next steps would be and we are so eager to find out if they were right. In Geography, we have visited two other countries this week: England and Wales. Some of us tried leek for the first time, which was very fun to see, and we also had a go at repeating the longest town name in all of the UK (Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch).

Year 3 – In maths we have been using our reasoning tool very well to interpret and complete bar charts, pictograms and tables. In literacy we have been enjoying more of our story ‘Escape from Pompeii’ and have used our imagination to think about how Tranio, the main character, is feeling when he is on a boat escaping from Pompeii with his friend Livia. We also gave Tranio and Livia some very good advice about what they should do and we were very pleased when they followed our advice! We have had a great time in science putting bones in the correct places to make a human skeleton and in naming the different bones. We have also been finding out lots of interesting things about Sikhism!

Year 4/5 – We have been learning about atlases and used our knowledge of how to use the index to help us locate countries in North, South and Central America.  We have also explored human geographical features in Mexico and learnt all about Chichen Itza in the Yucatan peninsula. In Reading we have split into new groups and are really looking forward to reading all the new texts we have been recommended by Lynn from the Literacy Tree. Year 4/5 A have their last swimming session today then it will be the turn of 4/5B in January. All classes will have a second term in Year 6. Some Year 5 children have been working on their bikeability awards this week, it has been really cold but they have persevered and loved it!

Year 6 – This week, we have taken on the role as journalist and reported about the shocking and turbulent events that led to the tragic death of King Kong! In geography, we have been comparing life in UK to life in Morocco we have been using our making links tools to compare the many similarities and differences both human and geographical. We have used the book Mirror which is written in both Arabic and English to imagine what life is like in the beautiful country of Morocco!
