The Heatwave Edition! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our learning at Dulwich Wood this week:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reception<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has been a very unusual week due to the intense heatwave! Naturally, we were all a little disappointed that our school trip had to be cancelled, but the children were very mature and understood that this decision was made to keep everyone safe. We will do our best to rearrange the trip under more suitable conditions so that everyone can enjoy it as it was intended. In the meantime, we have made the most of the sunshine with lots of water play and have been discussing ways to stay safe and comfortable in hot weather, including wearing light clothing, applying sunscreen, wearing a sun hat, staying hydrated and playing in shaded areas. Well done to all our Reception superstars!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have had a fantastic (very hot) week at school. In our geography lesson this week the children learnt all about how the weather can affect us. They were great at making links<\/strong> between the lesson objective and their first-hand experiences of the hot weather and the wild thunderstorm this week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wow, what a hot week! Y2 have done an amazing job managing their distractions in the hot weather. They have been practising telling the time to the nearest quarter of an hour and this has required some serious perseverance<\/strong> skills. They have even started to learn to the nearest 5 minutes and have been making links<\/strong> to their 5 times table! In literacy, the children have been drafting some amazing non-chronological reports on either frogs or meerkats, using commas in a list and expanded noun phrases to describe what they eat and how they are adapted to their habitats. Well done Y2 for approaching the heatwave with maturity and flexibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y3 have been using our empathy<\/strong> tools this week – thinking about how others are feeling in this extreme heat. We have discussed ways that we can look out for each other during the day and ensure we are all staying hydrated, cool and safe in the sun. In geography, we have been taking inspiration from the heat wave in our learning about tropical rainforests. We explored the different layers of the rainforest and enjoyed an immersive session with the sounds (and temperatures!) of the rainforest in our classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 4 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y4 have kept cool by thinking about rivers, reaching the lower course of the River Thames in our learning and starting to plan our enquiry questions for next week’s trip around the South Bank and to see the Thames Barrier. Please let the office know if you are keen to volunteer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dulwich Wood has been very responsible in this heatwave and has been using methods such as putting sprinklers in the playground, keeping us cool and well, wet!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another thing, is finishing school early, allowing parents to pick up their children at the end of their lunch break. This is a way of making sure that children are relaxed and calm, – not just sitting in a classroom, overheating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to keep cool at home, here are some top tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure you are not in an incredibly hot\/humid space for more than needed, wear shorts or cool breezy shirts.  Another way to stop you from becoming too hot, is putting something cool (like cold water) on the back of your neck. You could also have cool showers instead of usual warm\/hot shower. Also, if you have a hot water bottle, you could put it in the freezer and use it as a cold-water bottle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WINDRUSH DAY 2026<\/strong>: On Monday, some Dulwich Wood children dressed up to celebrate their Caribbean heritage. We all enjoyed a special Caribbean lunch and took part in an assembly led by Mr Crawford. We watched the inspiring interview of Alford Gardner, one of the last surviving members of the Windrush Generation. We used our empathy<\/strong> goggles<\/strong> to imagine what it was like to arrive in the UK in 1948. It reminded us of the bravery, strength and important contributions of the Windrush Generation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Please make sure that children have a hat and water bottle with them every day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CHILDREN WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO PLAY ON THE PLAYGROUND IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT IF THEY ARE WEARING A HAT UNTIL THE END OF TERM! IF THEY DO NOT HAVE A HAT THEY WILL NEED TO REMAIN IN THE SHADE. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relationships, Sex and Health Education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the year groups will be delivering their RSE lesson sequence over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please read the Relationship, Sex and Health Education Policy <\/a>so you know what your child will be taught and how best to support them at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children can be withdrawn from sex education unless it forms part of statutory Relationships Education and Health Education or the science national curriculum. If you have any concerns or queries please speak to your child\u2019s Class Teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
