Our learning at Dulwich Wood this week:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reception<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of our history curriculum, we have continued developing our understanding of the concepts of ‘past and present’ and have begun reading \u2018The Great Fire of Tooley Street\u2019 by Sue Rogers. To support our learning about this historic event, we have been finding out lots of fascinating facts about the River Thames. The children have made excellent use of their asking questions<\/strong> learning tool to deepen their knowledge and discover even more about this important London landmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Year 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y1 children are becoming real \u2018Planet Protectors\u2019! We made links<\/strong> between the protests against segregation and a protest to save planet Earth from floods and other disasters. Children made banners to protest on the playground and call attention to the problems our planet is facing. We agreed that using collaboration<\/strong> is the only way to success, just like in our story: Flooded!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week Y2 have been using their empathy<\/strong>\u00a0goggles<\/strong> to show kindness to each other and collaborate<\/strong>\u00a0to figure out how to find a third of amounts in Maths. They have also used their collaboration<\/strong> tool to play a game in Geography where they needed to find different oceans, seas, continents and capital cities using their atlas skills. They continued to ask questions <\/strong>and make links<\/strong>\u00a0to prior learning whilst starting Whole Class Reading sessions where they are exploring different reading skills. Planning<\/strong>\u00a0tools have been used successfully to draft a speech explaining why we must protect the land and water!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y3 started the week with a brilliant trip to the Natural History Museum. We used our asking questions<\/strong> tool to explore the galleries with Mary Anning’s amazing fossil finds and the volcanoes and earthquakes displays. It was a lot of fun, but also a great way to make links<\/strong> with our learning in school! We have also been hard at work in maths, persevering<\/strong> with some tricky work on time. We had to use our imagining<\/strong> tool in geography, writing and presenting a weather report for a tropical rainforest location.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 4 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week in Y4, we began our exciting new Guided Reading book ‘The Lost Spells’, which is full of poetry about our natural world, and started our Geography \u2018journey\u2019 down the River Thames, starting from the source in Gloucestershire. We also used our imagining<\/strong> tools to write amazing descriptions of the Earth as it was millions of years ago! The immense history of the Earth reinforces how important it is that we protect our planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 5<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y5 have been using our planning<\/strong> and empathy<\/strong> tools in Literacy to plan and write a balanced argument, considering whether robots should be given equal rights to humans, such as education and the right to vote. In Geography, we used our asking questions<\/strong> and making links<\/strong> tools to explore how places change over time and adapt to meet people\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 6<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y6 kicked off the week with an exciting trip to Chessington! Despite the rain, it was a fun-filled day and a wonderful opportunity to see the children using their empathy<\/strong> goggles\u00a0<\/strong>and collaboration<\/strong>\u00a0tools, especially when supporting classmates who felt nervous about going on rides. The encouragement and teamwork on display were fantastic to see. Back in class, we have been using our imagining\u00a0<\/strong>tool to continue writing our own versions of ‘The Tale of the Three Brothers’\u00a0in literacy, with some incredibly creative ideas emerging. In addition, we have been developing our making links<\/strong>\u00a0tool by connecting our reading knowledge of Charles Darwin to our science learning on ‘evolution’, deepening our understanding across subjects. We are so proud of their enthusiasm and thoughtful learning this week!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fun Run<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you to the Friends who made our Fun Run last week such a successful event! All of the staff, parents, and most importantly the children had the most wonderful day and raised important funds to support the revamp of our library. Please get your sponsorship money in asap! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transition Plan for September <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

End of Year Reports<\/strong>
Your child\u2019s end of year report will be sent home on Friday 3rd July. Alongside their report will be information about their class and teacher for next year. We know this can be a worrying experience for some children (and parents), social stories will be available to support your child through this. Each class will be thoughtfully split by the current teachers to ensure all children are in an engaging and welcoming environment. Please see the rationale for class mixes here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
