Our learning at Dulwich Wood this week:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reception<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following on from our discussions about the importance of eating a varied diet, this week we have been exploring different nutrient groups and learning how each one helps to keep our bodies healthy. We have also been discussing other ways to look after ourselves, including regular exercise and good sleeping habits, while making great use of our making links <\/strong>tool to connect our learning to personal experiences. To support our learning, we carried out an experiment investigating the effects of different drinks (milk, water, cola and orange juice) on our teeth by soaking eggs in each liquid for several days, as eggshells are made of calcium, just like our teeth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, we met a cheeky new character in our story ‘Cave Baby’. The children explored what it means to be cheeky by using their empathy goggles<\/strong> to understand how different characters might feel. They then used their imagining<\/strong> tool to create their own cave paintings, just like in the story \u2013 bringing the Stone Age to life in our classroom! In Science, we’ve been learning all about plants, including their life cycles and what they need to survive. Last week, the children were thrilled to plant their own sunflowers, and they’ve been observing them carefully each day. We’ve already spotted shoots and tiny leaves beginning to grow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following our exciting visit from some adorable chicks on Friday, Y2 have enthusiastically continued their learning about living things and their habitats. The children have been using their asking questions<\/strong>\u00a0and making links<\/strong>\u00a0tools to explore how living things get their energy and to understand and create their own food chains. We have also been learning about the features of a fact file. Using our planning tool<\/strong>, we mind-mapped ideas and started creating an informative fact file all about the Great Fire of London. The children enjoyed researching and organising their ideas carefully to make their writing engaging and interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y3 have started our new topic in science – rocks! We used our asking questions<\/strong> tool to be rock detectives, using a flow chart to identify a variety of rocks. It was quite tricky, so we really had to collaborate and persevere. We also had our last ukulele session of the year and said thank you to Joe who has been an amazing teacher.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 4 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y4 had a fantastic trip to the British Museum, where they explored a range of fascinating Egyptian artefacts linked to their learning about Ancient Egypt. Back in the classroom, the children became journalists, writing exciting newspaper reports about Howard Carter\u2019s discovery of Tutankhamun\u2019s tomb. In Computing, they also stepped into the role of audio editors, developing their podcasting and collaboration skills when learning how to edit and improve their own recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 5<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y5 have been using our planning<\/strong> and imagining<\/strong> tools in literacy to write thoughtful letters of advice using a formal tone. In science, we have been using our asking questions<\/strong> tool when learning about naturalists, as well as our planning <\/strong>tool to design an advert encouraging people to support the Jane Goodall Institute in protecting endangered chimpanzees!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 6<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, Y6 approached SATs with determination, resilience, and focus, drawing on every part of the Dulwich Wood Toolkit<\/strong>. All of the staff are incredibly proud of the effort and positive attitude they showed\u2014and the hard work doesn\u2019t stop here as we continue our learning and begin preparing for our end of year play! We also have some exciting trips coming up, so please do email the school office if you are able to offer your support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
