Autumn Term Learning Journey – Your Mind Matters<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Reception<\/strong>: The children are continuing to settle in beautifully & showing great perseverance as they get used to their new routines. We\u2019ve begun exploring phonics and maths, and have been enjoying stories about starting big school and celebrating birthdays (turning 4 or 5). These have sparked lovely discussions about the many feelings children experience during this exciting stage in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 1<\/strong> have been using their empathy goggles<\/strong> a lot this week! We had a class discussion about how to make Dulwich Wood Primary a more peaceful place; the children showed how kind and helpful they are when it comes to problem solving. They used their own experiences on the playground and came up with great ideas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 2<\/strong> have enjoyed making links<\/strong> in science as we started our new unit on materials. We used our reasoning <\/strong>tool to explain the materials that common objects are made from such as glass, wood and metal.  We had a lot of fun exploring what objects in our classroom and outside are made of! We can’t wait to investigate further!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 3<\/strong> have made wonderful use of our collaboration<\/strong> and empathy<\/strong> tools this week, discussing and writing part of a school charter for peace. We have thought all about what we want our school to be like and how we can make it a calm, supportive and caring place to learn. We also began our PE lessons, with Beech Class using their perseverance<\/strong> tool in their first swimming lesson at Dulwich College pool!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 4<\/strong> took part in their first science \u201ceggsperiment\u201d<\/em>, exploring the effects different liquids can have on our teeth. Using eggshells as a model for tooth enamel, the children made thoughtful predictions by applying their making links<\/strong> and reasoning<\/strong> thinking tools. They\u2019re eagerly awaiting the results after leaving their eggs in various liquids over the weekend \u2013 we can\u2019t wait to see what changes they observe!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 5<\/strong> have been using the planning<\/strong> and making links<\/strong> tools in science to carry out an exciting investigation, exploring the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. In literacy, we’ve started our new text ‘High Rise Mystery’ and have been using our empathy <\/strong>tool to delve into the different traits of the characters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 6<\/strong> have used their planning<\/strong> and imagining<\/strong> tools brilliantly to write beautifully descriptive poems about an arctic fox inspired by our literacy text, ‘Leila and the Blue Fox’. They have also used their perseverance<\/strong> to complete their first round of practice SATS papers, and we are so proud of their efforts!

Smartphone Free Childhood Parent Group News<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

At Dulwich Wood we have an active ‘Smartphone Free Childhood Parent Group’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday evening Jennifer from Papaya<\/a> came to school and delivered a talk on managing screens and technology for children. It was very eye opening and in some ways alarming, but great to hear about the ways in which we, as individuals and as a school community, can help protect our children from the serious harm we now know screen time can cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
