World Book Day at Dulwich Wood<\/strong> 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had an incredibly fun WBD at Dulwich Wood – dressing up & celebrating books and stories that we enjoy! Many thanks to all staff but particularly Miss Ledesma and Miss Wells for your excellent planning! Reception: <\/strong>Our use of the imagining<\/strong> tool has been nothing short of super-amazing this week as we have been using it to come up with our own superhero personas, thinking about the superpowers we\u2019d like to have. We then made great use of our making links<\/strong> tool to give ourselves superhero names that linked to our powers and finally, to design our own fabulous costumes, all related to our superpowers and new identities. Kaboom!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 1<\/strong> have had great fun acting out different scenes from ‘The Tempest’ to help the children better understand the story and characters. The children were great at using their imagining <\/strong>tool to get into role, thinking about how the characters might act or what they might say. It was so much fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 2<\/strong> explored a mysterious suitcase of belongings! Inside was a Jamaican flag, some herbal medicine, some shells and a family photograph. We used our asking questions<\/strong> tool to think about who the case might belong to and what the owner might be like based on their belongings. We are excited to find out more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 3<\/strong> have been making excellent use of their perseverance<\/strong> tool in maths this week, working hard to identify and compare unit and non-unit fractions.\u00a0 In history, we used our imagining<\/strong> tool as we learnt about the life of Boudica and her battle against the invading Romans. We really enjoyed thinking about how she must have felt during those vicious battles and depicting the key points in a storyboard activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 4<\/strong> – we took part in an inspiring online event with author Michael Rosen and illustrator Allen Fatimaharan to kick off the week, then linked<\/strong> this to creating our own characters on World Book Day and inspired by our study of ‘The Iron Man’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Year 5<\/strong> have been using our imagining <\/strong>tool to think about what life might have been like for Prospero and Miranda stranded on an island in ‘The Tempest’. Thinking about the character of Caliban, we have used our empathy <\/strong>goggles to think about his experience and his actions. We have also used our making links<\/strong> tool to draw upon our drama skills to start reading and acting out scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 6<\/strong> have had a whirlwind week! In Literacy, we have been using our imagining<\/strong> and planning<\/strong> tools to re-write a section of our text, adding in more detail by varying our sentences – adding fronted adverbials, figurative language and show, not tell. In maths we are nearing the end of our shape topic – where we are calculating angles in polygons! We would like to say a special thanks to Year 3 for our amazing buddy reading session on World Book Day – we loved it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dulwich Wood on the Telly!<\/strong>
Last year some of our brilliant children took part in filming for the new series of Operation Ouch! asking Dr Xand some amazing questions. You can watch the show on CBBC at 17:30 Monday to Thursday and the first 8 shows are available on iPlayer too. Enjoy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mobile Phones at Dulwich Wood<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a reminder that we are actively encouraging children not<\/strong> to bring mobile phones to school unless it is absolutely necessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I spoke to KS2 in assembly last week to remind them of this, and that sanctions are in place if mobile phones are used inappropriately on school premises at the beginning or the end of the day – such as taking photos – then phones will be confiscated and banned for 2 weeks. Parents will need to come into school and collect the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children must take their mobile phone to the office at the beginning of the day and collect at the end of the day. If you collect your child from school they don’t need to bring a mobile to school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime we are talking to children about how to use the internet safely, and that apps such as WhatsApp etc… are not age-appropriate for children at Dulwich Wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to remember that no primary school student meets the age criteria for social media apps \u2013 Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, X or TikTok \u2013 all of which have a minimum age of 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means that children are especially vulnerable, and should inappropriate content be shared, however innocently or accidentally, the parent or carer of that child is, by law, liable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
