Learning Journey – ‘Surroundings’

Kung Hei Fat Choi: On Monday 7th, the Assembly will be about Chinese New Year, if your child has anything linked to Chinese New Year please can they bring it in to show! Chartwells will be serving a special lunch to celebrate, there will only be 2 meal choices (no jacket potatoes or pasta), if you know your child will not want to try the special Chinese lunch please send them in with a home packed lunch. NB: Pre-arranged dietry requirements will still be catered for.

Tapestry: Please check your child’s Tapestry account, this week all classes will have a new home learning project as well as spellings, reading and maths to practise online. We have also uploaded a new STEAM question for all children to work on over the next few weeks. The winners of last month’s question will be announced on Monday.

A snapshot of our week:

Reception This has been a very special week in Reception. We have been learning all about Chinese New Year, making paper lanterns, writing some great good luck messages and even having a go at drawing some Chinese characters. We are very grateful to Teddy in RA and his family, as he very kindly gifted a lucky Chinese envelope for every child in Reception and then we had a fantastic zoom call with his mummy in which the children really enjoyed learning about the traditional celebrations for Chinese New Year.

Year 1 What a busy week we’ve had! On Monday, we were surprised to find a lonely penguin with a tag around its neck explaining that it was lost. We realised it was connected to our new book ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. The next day, lots of lost animals appeared in our classrooms, so we made found tags to put round their necks to try and help them get home. We have really impressed our teachers by using our ‘making links’ tool by finding connections between previous books we’ve read. In geography, we have been learning all about the seven continents and using atlases to help us. Please keep an eye out for an email with a zoom link for next Thursday at 5PM, we will be delivering a reading session for Parents (IMPACT) where we’ll be explaining our new approach to reading in Year 1.

Year 2 We have been using our asking questions tool this week to unravel another mystery, that took place outside 2A’s classroom. We found a gigantic beanstalk, huge footprints, a large wig and some massive false teeth. We came up with some fantastic predictions, and eventually we realised that all of those objects were linked to the story “Jim and the Beanstalk” by Raymond Briggs. In maths, we have been working on interpreting and recording data, using both tally charts and pictograms. We even linked this to our science topic of plants and made a bar graph to show the growth of our sunflowers and narcissus in the past 4 weeks.  It would be great if children could carry on playing TTRS and become even more fluent in their times tables. On this note and to carry on with this mathematical vibe, we are setting a weekend competition between 2A and 2B. There will be certificates for the winning class and for the children with the highest scores; so don’t forget to play and help your class to win!

Year 3 We have finished our thought-provoking book ‘The Tin Forest’ and have been inspired to create leaflets and posters to protect as well as look after our own local ‘forest’; Dulwich Woods! In art, we have been creating tin forest animals to hang in the woods and on Wednesday 9th February we are going to put all of our creativity together for a forest extravaganza in Dulwich Woods. This will include a dramatic interpretation of The Tin Forest book performed by the children!! Thank you in advance, to the Parents who have volunteered to help make this happen. It would be brilliant, if this weekend, the children could design some other tin creations to hang during our visit! Please bring them to school on Monday. We can’t wait!!!

Year 4 We have had an amazing week, it’s been an absolute pleasure for Miss Drummond and Mrs Holman- Hirst to teach the children.  We started our own version of ‘The Mermaid of Zennor’ – a Cornish folk tale about mysterious mythical creature that live in the cove. We created our own mythical creatures that are half human and half aquatic and wrote detailed setting descriptions using our senses, prepositional phrases and expanded noun phrases. In Maths, we were finding the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares. We also carried out a science experiment looking at different insulators and conductors around the classroom and enjoyed an extra PE lesson!!

Year 5 This week, the children have been writing their very own crime and investigation stories, based on the ‘High Rise Mystery’. They ‘magpied’ Sharna Jackson’s writing techniques, using short sentences to build suspense and using figurative language, such as idioms, similes, metaphors, hyperboles and even onomatopoeias, the results have been amazing! We have been adding and taking away mixed numbers in order to build on our understanding of fractions. In history, the children became investigators as they tried to uncover the mystery of the Sutton Hoo burial. We were so impressed with their focus and enthusiasm at trying to solve the case.
